So the Kia was simply a moving chicane to the faster 6's and 8's...
But on camera, it looks like the Kia was, as Charlie Sheen puts it, "Winning!"

Those series are entertaining but yeah, the mix and match bothers me too...
I'm OK seeing a Porsche being beaten by a ferrari, or a Corvette by an M3, believable stuff... I think the GTS category are the main offenders... Kias and 370Zs hanging with Aston GT4s, Mustangs, 911s.... Doesn't seem right, does it! Used to be worse when Grand AM allowed what looked like an Rx8 (really a tube frame machine) and it beat cars that its street likeness would have no hope of getting close to.... No, just no.... I get what the organizers are doing but when the race car competitiveness is not a reflection of the usual street car pecking order, I just lose interest... |

We all know that Kia and Hyundai are basically the same company, right?
07/01/2013, COSTA MESA, California HYUNDAI POWERED UNLIMITED RACE CAR SETS THE SECOND FASTEST TIME IN PIKES PEAK HILL CLIMB HISTORY Millen Sets Personal Best Time of 9:02.102 to the 14,115 Ft. Summit PIKES PEAK, COLORADO, July 1, 2013 – Rhys Millen and his Hyundai-powered race car finished second overall and set the second fastest time in history at the 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb today. Millen set a blistering pace to the summit in his specially-prepared Hyundai powered race car, needing only 9:02.192 to make international motorsports' most challenging ascent. For 2013, Millen's own race team, Rhys Millen Racing (RMR), built an all-new unlimited-class, tube frame racecar powered by a production-based Hyundai lambda engine block, heads, and powertrain support equipment. The production Hyundai electronic power steering in the car also performed flawlessly today at high and low speeds while providing a lot of feedback. “Years of experience spent on Pikes’ challenging 156 turns paid off in a big way for the RMR team this year,” said Millen. “By building an all-new Hyundai Genesis PM580-T tarmac-focused racecar, the team made precise adjustments, building upon last years’ world record. We focused on leveraging monster downforce, creating incredible traction for our rear-drive strategy on the all-tarmac road surface. Behind the wheel, considerable experience at Pikes Peak over the years allowed me to shave a few tenths from every challenging apex.”

To me - a Hyundai (or Kia) racecar is like a pig wearing lipstick... I don't care how many sponsor stickers or HP you can cram into that thing -- I still don't like it! ![]() -Z

I said it before but it bear repeating, people said the same thing about Honda, Toyota, Datsun 30 years ago.

All I want, is it either bloody obvious its not your street car ALA Daytona Prototype, or, your street car can be fairly close in performance to what is on the track. I'm ok with a "V8 Camry" in NASCAR where its just different stickers and glass outlines on the chassis for everyone. This is definitely not your Honda road going vehicle.

Toyota - besides NASCAR's "Camry" there really is no strong Toyota presence in racing today. After the 2nd Gen MR2, they really stopped making sports cars. The Supra became a bloated grand-touring cruiser, and the Celica (a sporty compact) went by the way-side. As for Datsun - the 370Z is essentially a re-badged G37. (Or is that the other way around??) Ok - you do have Godzilla (aka the GT-R), but that's not even available in a manual transmission (wait - isn't there a thread about that??) Toyota and Kia/Hyundai are practical people movers. (Excluding Hyundai's rally effort). They should stick to what they do best. -Z

Well, not a sports car per se
![]() They ballast those cars to make it even. Car starts winning too much, reward them with extra weight. Mitsubishi does, don't think they are known for reliability though.

Toyota?
They have the GT86 and are competing very well among Porsche and Audi in endurance racing. They're not quite dead, but then I'm biased. I work for'em!
