Similar incident happened to my brother.

He parked his VW Rabbit at the local department store and when he came back there was an SUV with it's bumper resting on the front bumper of the VW.

So he calls the police and they wait for the owner of the SUV to walk over to his vehicle.

Owner states he did not hit the VW and says my brother ran into his SUV.

Police officer told them both to forget it since there was no proof to determine who was at fault

I just got back from Manhattan

All the nice cars there have boards dangling from ropes tied to their trunks in order to protect their bumpers.

NEVER park at the end of a row the last spot from a fire hydrant. Your car will get shoved into the fire hydrant spot where you will get a ticket.

If it is a short enough line, and a big enough SUV, the whole line of cars will be sifted forward one spot by the guy at the back looking for a paring space.

We have bumper boards in Chicago too. You can tell a city car from a suburb car by just looking at the bumpers. I have a 2003 Passat for the past 4 years and both F & R bumpers are scratched and dinged. When I lived in the burbs, I had a Volvo station wagon. The bumpers looked untouched but I had several door dent dings.

I'm not vengeful either - it's impossible to keep anything nice in a city.

This is part of living in the city. Pick the appropriate vehicle and no one will mess with it and you won't worry. You chose poorly. Your vehicle was separated from the herd as the runt and was set upon.

When I work in Chicago we don't get a rental car we take a taxi everywhere... first trip we did rent a car (parking is crazy expen$ive!!!!) after a few days we decided "you don't go out to a restaurant... you go out to find a parking space... then find someplace to eat near where you parked."

Same with Boston, I never rent a car there, train (trolly) will take you within walking distance of almost anywhere you want to go.

Install a pintile hitch with a lock in your hitch receiver. And a push bar on the front.

This attitude bothers me, I guess living in the country and being brought up to respect people and property you simply don't intentionally damage someones stuff.
