Not a war flick in the dramatic sense, but here's a shout out for "The Civil War" by Ken Burns.
Watch it right before or right after you watch Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" for that extra special sense of historical significance. |

Surprised "Gallipoli" and "The Deer Hunter" took so long to show up...SPR is a given and for a series "Band of Brothers."
Thx Richard for the heads up on the Thin Red Line...guess that's what I'ma gunna watch and raise a glass to George Washington and his ilk on this fine Independence Day!

Both great local productions.
My son was an extra in Russell Crowe's The Water Diviner. Here he is all dressed up just before his scene. He portrayed a Turkish Boy Soldier. ![]()

farewell to the king.
written and directed by john milius. nick nolte plays a g.i. who escapes the bataan death march to wind up a tribal king in the mountains of borneo. but then the war catches up with him. zulu dawn epic movie about the battle of Isandlwana that lead to roarke's drift. maybe not a great movie but good. breaker morant technically a war movie. the light horsemen. along with breaker mordant and gallipoli this completes the australians angry about ww1 trilogy. das boot claustrophobic nightmare. hamburger hill lot of garbage vietnam movies came out in the 80s. this one holds up. the dam busters half the extras are the real war heroes. to hell and back cheesy movie starring real ass kicker audie murphy.

Gallipoli was very, very good. The Deer Hunter used to be one of my favorites, as well.

"Born on the 4 th of July" is one of my favorites. not mentioned yet. The story of Ron Kovic. A movie that really touches the soul and really communicates that "war is hell". Platoon and the Deer Hunter also fantastic movies as previously stated.
