"Platoon" was the best TV show; "We Were Soldiers" is my favorite war movie.
I used to watch "Platoon" with my dad; he said it was the most realistic TV show he'd ever seen done on Vietnam. It was very moving for him, and it fascinated me because it gave me a glimpse into what he'd gone through, yet wouldn't talk about.

Battleground -- if for nothing else the end scene as they are pulling out after the Bulge.
Enemy Below - tried to tell the story from the German side. Major Dundee - for the hell of it

I'll go with Robert Alddrich's 'ATTACK' from Norman Brooks play, adapted by James Poe....
Attack (1956) - IMDb You will not think of Jack Palance, Lee Marvin, Buddy Ebsen, and especially Eddie Albert ever the same...

The original or the remake?
If the remake...sorry Charlie not great nor really good. "From Here to Eternity" and "The Thin Red Line" were both James Jones WW2 novels. At the end of the movie Eternity the character Pruitt played by Montgomery Clift dies, but in the novel he continues on to Red Line.

Major Dundee Peckinpah was at the Directors helm during this one. However he disavowed the finished movie as the studio tampered with his version.
Peckinpah then went on to do his ostensible masterpiece The Wild Bunch in 69. My fav Peckinpah is The Ballad Of Cable Hogue wt Robards and Stella Stevens. Other films by Peckinpah are Straw Dogs, The Get Away McQueen and Ali Mcgraw with Slim Pickens, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia , Pat Garret And Billy The Kid Colburn and Kristoffen Osterman Weekend, Cross Of Iron Colburn and Junior Bonner Peckinpah had a usual cast of character actors including Slim Pickens, LQ Jones, Strother Martin, Warren Oates, Dub Taylor. Who can ever forget the bickering between Strother and LQ in the Wild Bunch?
