Gas holes tops of pistons
Windsor 302
Nephew already bought pistons for his wana be lil cruiser car (1962 Comet ) KOOL ! He has most the stuff to make it a real fun engine for . Cam, manifold , .011 decked block, 60 CC AL heads with 202 valves and all. SO I was trying hard to adjust the drag of oil rings on these so called "performance pistons". Come to find out after much frustration they are just hyper pistons with a moly skirt. They fit nice- BUT he has standard go to twn Aunt Tilly grocery getter rings ! OK, cant send pistons back. Cant allow 40 pound drag rings in there either! Is it a BIG trick to drill tops for gas operated low drag piston rings ? This does not look like a magic trick. OR should i just send them out, to where, for some holes ? Your opinion? thanx |
What hp @ what RPMs is he expecting to turn? I use standard rings ,moly faced top one in a 347 , stroked 302 Windsor, which dynoed @ 468 hp @6400 flywheel. I regularly wind it to 6800 and don,t think I left much on the table (KB icon forged pistons ,AFR heads ,Anderson N-71 cam ).
Your standard cast rings will have less friction after they break in. |
The benefit largely depends on: ring land / location, ring thickness, and max RPM. The problem with running that even in limited street use is carbon build up plugging the tiny holes..............................all based on my experience.
I would consult the piston manufacturer as to what they recommend. Hopefully you'll get a knowledgeable guy on the other end of the phone. |

Can or would someone point me to a part number or place that will sell a med drag ring?
* The rings he has now takes a freight train to move the piston with JUST the oil rings in there. I did not even measure it as its just TOOOOoo much Thanx Next - He is hoping for 400 HP at around 5500 its not a real race car, i call it a Ricky race car. More of a ego trip....But then i think it all is anyway. Asphault, - thanx for the tip and thanx johnsjmc. Goood job on HP ! looks usuable This car is just a hamburger dan car Sat night Special |
