70's Science Fiction movies
Been introducing my 11 y/o to classic "dad" cinema. We watched Andromeda Strain last night. At nearly 2 hours long and loads of dialogue I figured she would check out before the halfway mark. She stuck through the whole show and at the end commented about how intense it was. This coming from a Harry Potter/ Pirates of the Caribbean fan.
So I began a list of my favs from the era and came up with. Westworld, Rollerball, Logan's Run, Soylent Green, 2001 Space Odyssey Suggestions? The pacing and length of scenes during the movies are so different than our current cinema offerings. I like the subtle political references in the 70's movies, good stuff.

Never saw Man Who Fell to Earth. Paid money to see Flash Gordon. Wish I had my 2.50 back from that one. Alien was awesome but I was trying a more vintage 70's vibe. A Boy and His Dog was quite good, that may make the cut. Planet of the Apes, good suggestion.

As far as 70's sci-fi goes, I liked the Bruce Dern classic, Silent Running, Capricorn One, and although panned by some, The Black Hole had a late 50's early 60's sci-fi vibe to it which I enjoyed.
Expand it out a little (to 1982) and the original Tron was pretty good. While we are sloshing through the eighties, Trancers (with Tim Thomerson and Helen Hunt), Night of the Comet and The Last Starfighter were good movies. 70's sci-fi on tv includes the original Battlestar Gallactica and Buck Rogers if you want to expand it out even more.

2001 is a cut WAY above the rest. And it was released in 1968 before Neil Armstrong took his giant leap. The sequel 2010 came out on 1984. Neither are technically 1970s movies but they are great as a pair.

Some of the suggestions probably aren't suitable for an 11 yo (Highlander, Boy and His Dog, Man Who Fell to Earth). IMDb has a Parent's Guide for most, if not all movies, that gives details on language, nudity, etc.
Some bad sci-fi is pretty good with the right commentary.

Just a few more that I remember and like. Time after Time (Malcolm McDowell) was one of the first time travel movies I remember seeing and at the time, I thought it was great. Coma hasn't been mentioned yet, and is another Crichton thriller that was a box office hit.
Slipping into the 80's once again, Blue Thunder was excellent. Runaway, with Tom Selleck (written by Michael Crichton), was a little cheezy but still good.

+1 on 2001, last starfighter, Tron...
Maybe a little pre 1970, War of the worlds (the original) or if you want to go waaaaaaay back, Forbidden planet. Going way out on a limb here: 1000 Fingers of Doctor Terwilliger Yeah, I'm weird...

Was "Zardoz" (with Sean Connery) any good ?
Not from the 70's: I enjoyed the 1980 'made for TV' version of Brave New World. (Don't blame me if it sucked, though, because I was only 12.) I also enjoyed Brazil and The Quiet Earth.

My repertoire does not extend back very far into the 1970s, so I'm with Baz on "The Hidden". Loved that flick.
I'll add "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" " Invasion of the Body Snatchers" all of the "Star Trek" movies, especially The Movie and there was a TV series called Space: 1999. I always thought the toys from that show were the best. |

I vote a big "NO" for Alien for an 11-year-old.

Capricorn one,
Also- what is the name of the movie where the astronauts go to mars, get out of their ship. There is an earth-like atmosphere and they are on some farm in idaho or something with a farmhouse- and the aliens have something akin to blowguns/ blow darts? ..and no I'm not smoking anything- I just can't remember the name of it ( I was about 8) |
