Just picked my 01 yesterday after dropping it off Monday. Only one airbag to replace though.

So I don't get it, that letter basically tells me don't drive it or it can kill you, it's a safety device that can be legal, so why is it not mandated by the Government's all over tge world tge maker has to pay for everyone's rentals until fixed?

Back around September I got the notice for the passenger side on my 05 Pontiac Vibe. Basically said don't use the passenger side until it is fixed, but we don't have parts. In February I got the notice that they had the part and to make an appointment.
Two weeks later I get the notice with big bold letters. I made an appointment for last week, they took care of it in the morning.

The tech didn't re-learn the idle, so the car was constantly stalling as I was driving home. Otherwise no problem.

All recalls are potentially lethal.

3. It needlessly adds complexity and expense. I guess needlessly is a bit strong, but not by much.

Worth noting, the age and era of the airbag is also a big difference. I have known multiple people injured in benign accidents by early airbags, think mid-90s cars. Newer cars with smart airbags with staged charges and seat sensors seem to be far less dangerous. Unless they blast shards of metal into your face.

I have no concern driving a car without an airbag, but I suspect the probability of an airbag saving your life is far greater than the risk of it killing you.

Lawyers have great success suing car manufacturers when people die in collisions and the airbags failed to deploy.

I took the wifes car, 2103 Acura TL SH AWD w/tech package to Acura. they wanted to give a loaner car for 3 + months and wanted us to take our car back home after signing a do not operate waiver. It is our anniversary today so I told them I wanted to trade it on a 2017 RDX AWD tech package. We argued hard over the trade in value. My car had 29K and is in showroom condition. Dealer says they couldn't give me market value because of the recall. WRONG answer!!! Mrs Crusty thought I was going to mentally deflate the sales manager, she has never seen me in that kind of situation before. I basically got 1500 more than fair market value for the trade and the missus got 3800 off MSRP for her new ride.

Our 2011 BMW is part of it, BUT...the dealership said not only do they not have the repair parts, they haven't been designed yet.
Same here for 2008 and 2012 BMW.

So I went in and talked to the local Honda service adviser today. He started out with a canned speech designed to persuade me to continue driving the vehicle - 'the problem vehicles are those located in Florida and other humid climates, blah, blah, blah'. When he finished, I pointed out that Honda did not include any geographic limitations in their letter and, in fact, sent the letter to my home in Michigan. He then changed to the canned speech for rental vehicles They will pay $35max/day for a vehicle ("whatever is available that day") from Enterprise. I have to leave my vehicle at the dealer. I then went to Enterprise and told them I would need a comparable vehicle, not a "whatever's available". They said no problem if you're flexible on the day to pick it up. They will get me a small SUV at the $35 rate with unlimited mileage (I drive +50K per year) sometime next week.

I figure having the rental will put me at the top of the list for parts when they become available since Honda won't want to pay the rental fee any longer than possible.

I'm interested to see the bullet point version of this if you feel comfortable!

I rear-ended a guy a month ago in 02' VW Passat. He suddenly decided to brake hard and make a U-turn (over full line).

I can tell you that I am immensely glad that airbags and pyrotechnic seat belt tensioners exist. I opened the door and stepped out unharmed. Yes, I did hit a airbag. It was a bit scary (noise, smoke) but I would rather headbutt an airbag than steering wheel. Every time. And yes, I always wear a seatbelt. The combination of seatbelt + pre tensioners + airbag worked perfectly. Not a scratch.

I bought another 02' VW Passat and actually opened the wheel to check if airbag is there and that it is made by "Autoliv" and not "Takata".

I'm not sure I understand that statement. Right now we are upside down with her new car but will pay it off next year.
