Interesting, albeit poorly produced, video. Not super surprising, on a track with long straights I think the 930 would have beaten the Boxster but still probably not passed the 996. The 996 has similar power to weight, no lag, and the benefit of 15 years worth of development and technology.
I've driven all of them, and owned plenty of 986s and 996s. Both are screaming deals for what you get, especially the 986 Boxster which is fantastic to drive. Someday I suspect another 986 or 996 will join my SC in the garage. Just an aside, if you are going to market your cars in a Youtube video, make sure they are sorted first. All were filthy with lots of swirls in the paint, the 986 top was in terrible shape and didn't fit correctly and the 911SC badge was about to fall off.

It would interesting to add a stock 1985 959 to a test like that. Almost everyone in 85 was astonished at the fantastic performance of the 959. It is now beyond crazy money expensive. I suspect a new 991 Turbo from 2016 would outperform the 959 by a lot except maybe for top speed. 31 years of technology is impossible to beat.
Was there any street car made in the mid 80s or before than can beat the lap times of a new Porsche 911?

Looks to me like the SC lost a little time right off the line.

I'm not a super driver but my boxster makes me look really fast and it's just too easy. When I drive the old aircooled stuff I feel slow, twitchy, raw but it's sooo much fun.
I was surprised the 930 didn't perform better. Maybe the track or the driver. And I agree if you are showcasing your vehicles they should be in better condition Last edited by faverymi; 03-30-2016 at 04:50 AM.. |

I think an 87-89 928 could best a 996 on the track. Just a guess though.

928S4 is similar power but heavier, 996 is 10+ years better developed, I would put my money on the 996.

I do know one thing.
When my Dad bought his 1993 RX7 I was living in a place called Cobb Island, Maryland. The road from HWY 301 to Cobb Island was really well done, with beautiful sweepers, straights, etc. Late one night my Dad and I decided on a quick test: His RX7 versus my 1983 911SC. GO! That was about the last I saw of him ![]()

Narrator was a little windy. Snap over-steer for the 930? Horse pucky. All but the Boxster will demonstrate profound "trailing throttle" over-steer but you have to cook a corner and then be ignorant. I have and I was. It happens faster than I ever imagined it could, even on the newest of rear engine Porsches. They ain't twitchy, though. Put the Stig in these cars with some seat time and I bet the 930 would come out ahead of the Boxster on that track. Boxster is a joy to drive fast.

It was nice to see, and I'm quite surprised, to see the SC do so well.
Yay, go SC! I wonder how Joe Average SC would do (ROW 204HP, 964 cam, SSIs, a bit of weight loss...)? |

Cool. That Renstall place went up right near my Greeley office about a year ago. I heard it was started by a long-time PCA racer/instructor guy, but don't know him. I drive by all the time, but I have yet to stop in. They have some cool looking cars there all the time. I was surprised to watch the video and see "Rennstall Greeley, CO" on all the cars. Guess it's time to swing by and check it out.
They have a cool website: http://www.rennstall-usa.com/

I was done when the "pro" bucked the SC off the line...
If that guy is a "Pro Driver", I'm Ayrton Senna. Then, again, those don't look like great tires... OneWhipped, I'm with you on the presentation of the cars.
