Thinking of buying a new Hemi
A new VINTAGE Hemi that is., 426ci. of course. They can be had at Indy Cylinder Head
and a few other places. Anybody been there done that as far as Hemi engines go? They're not giving them away so have to do a bit of research. Actually the local Dodge dealer maybe able to get us one. New crate. We'll find out Monday. They can be a costly thing to fix so I think a used unit from ebay, for example, is a bit risky. The thing most likely to break on a Hemi? Your bank account. The guy I work for seems to "need" one, so I kinda volunteered to help locate. I love my work. |
So what does one go for?
|
Seem to be from $17,500 -$25,000 or more. We think we can get a long block
from the local dodge dealer for $15,500. But we'll see what Monday brings. It might not happen, but it's fun looking. |
What are you gonna put that thing in?
|
My friend has a charger and he'd like to build a tribute car like Buddy Bakers blue #88 that turned the first 200+ mph. Not easy and not cheap. But.... It's his $$
This one would do the trick, http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1460204553.jpg Bakers carhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1460204707.jpg |
I could barely afford this one!
|
Hope he has enough sense to have the heads and intake (if not the block too) done in aluminum!!

Thinking of buying a new Hemi
Wow, amazing they are so expensive. More than the 3.2 liter hemi in my 911 ;) And it is an aluminum block! ;)
|
What's it going into?

rear window has to be changed etc Big $$$ So it might not happen, but everybody should have a 426 Hemi right? So if we get this engine (hemi) it might just go in a charger or a cuda as a street musclecar. |
are the Superbirds/Daytonas now considered attractive?
me? i'd stick that motor in a Dodge Dart. |

I may know someone who could put you on to a wing car, or something appropriate for that mill to go into, anyway. He had a Superbird shell, original 440 car, but may have sold it. Had a few others
|
Car and motor look good. I really like Alfas, always wanted a '70's GTV. Is that a Montreal?
|
One of 3800 Da Pumpkin! Yes it is. It's a time capsule. I own 7 and she's awesome. Bought her 20 years ago for 17K GOK what's it's worth, don't care I just drive her when I can. You can't imagine. Ask urseppos he got to drive me Race Car and that's a 2L. I got an ALFA Museum in VT. All are invited!! Did Porsche ever build a HEMI??

Would the 426 be more streetable than the original? I believe back in the day, the 440 was more practical, but the 426 has the cache, I suppose even in a tribute car. Probably enough to justify the cost difference. Was that Charger originally green (Sublime)?
|
An old friend in high school had a 71 GTX with a hemi. His dad owned a shop and bought up any late 60 and 70 muscle cars. This was in 1977 when the value was down.
Steve was correct. the 440 was more practical (hydraulic lifters). The hemi was high maintenance always adjusting the valves. But it was worth it. The sound of that engine wide open or just at idle was priceless. |
Yeah, its lure is the look and sound. These toys are mostly for show.
|
I have been working on 426's for close to 20 yrs.......
|
Nice 70 Charger
to get the 426 to live in there we need to know first if that is a big block or small block car . the rad opening is different. 22 inch for small block or 26 for big block or Hemi also the fuel pickup in the tank as well as the lines will be too small. next is motor mounts. schumacker makes swap mount to stuff a 426 on 440 mounts. then brakes, if you want power brakes you have to move the brake booster over using a Z bracket or it will hit the valve covers. most people run manual disc using a master cylinder from a later half ton Dodge truck. CALL RAY BARTON |

just pulled this one out of my 70 Challenger for a rebuild
by the way...........Happy Hemi Day today's date is 426 |
Also, I know where you can get the wing, rear window plug and nose cone for the Charger.
|
It's amazing that in the day, those winged cars just sat and sat on dealers' lots, eventually being sold cheap!

I agree with all above who say "don't do it" but my friend wants a Dodge Daytona and I think that's what's goin' to happen.
So the back window is different too. First hurdle I suspect. Could be a long road with a lot of bumps. |
