A 2008 997 Turbo or 2015 Z06?

Just curious. What would you prefer a 2008 997.1 Turbo cab with 33K miles or a 2015 Z06 with 7,600 miles and OEM track package options.

What's the application? Am I looking for a track car or a street car to do occasional track days? For track use, I'd lean towards the coupe for safety reasons. But for a pure street car, I like your cab.

speeder 04-17-2016 07:12 PM

Z06 all day and I'm a Porsche guy. If the 997tt was a coupe it would be more of a contest but I'd still probably take the new Z06. It's an amazing car and much more track oriented. :)

Is there a fix for Zs pulling timing and overheating on track?

I'd definitely take the Z over the vert.

z06. all day. and I, like speeder, am a Porsche guy.

Z06

A friend bought the Z06 as a daily driver. It's way too much car for him. I can have it for the payoff balance. If I sold the 997TT I could get into the Z06 for about $6k out of pocket.

I'd like to do 8 or 10 time trial weekends with the POC, but don't want to get back into the truck and trailer game...or sucked back into W2W. Every time I take the 997TT to the track something brakes. Last was the ABS pump...OUCH! The Z06 is a perfect drive to the track car.

I'd miss the TT, and my wife loves it. I wish I could afford both. I can't.

Z06

Why not get an older Z06 for a track rig and keep the 997tt?

I wasn't really looking for a Z06 Sid. The opportunity just popped up today. I suppose if I was going to get a dedicated track car, I would buy a stripped 996.

porsche4life 04-17-2016 09:32 PM

Ya.... Lots of options if you go that route.

I'd keep the 997tt if I was you. Think depreciation. The Z06 is still on the down swing, is think the 997 isn't far from the bottom. But drive it and let us know what you think!

You guys are delusional! It's a plastic POS!

onewhippedpuppy 04-18-2016 03:37 AM

I would have to drive the Z06 first, I've not driven a new one. Sid makes a good point about depreciation, you are guaranteed to lose money on the Z. The 997TT is getting pretty close to the bottom. Maybe look at it from a different angle - if you were to sell the 997TT, would you choose to buy a Z06?

I wonder how many of you who would rate a vette coupe over a 911 cab have actually lived with a cab. From a pure motoring experience, I find it it very difficult to beat the cab experience. As an added bonus, the fan spooling is 2X the pleasure in a cab.

Macroni 04-18-2016 05:37 AM

Based upon track requirement..... ZO6; DD....Turbo Cab

aschen 04-18-2016 06:48 AM

Honestly I think the zo6 might be a little too fast for a track car. Blasphemy I know but I'm not sure I want to be doing 160 mph on a med length straight with 3pt belts and no cage.

for any kind of track work, the z06 is miles better.

frankly, for the pure fun of top down motoring ... why anyone would own a cabrio porsche is just silly. what is the point? if i want a convertible for street cruising there are dozens of cheaper, better cabrios out there. and if you want a real performance car, and esp track use, it basically has to be a coupe.

i will never understand cabrio 911s.

Craig, Haven't driven the new Vette yet but have owned several Vettes in both C5 & C6 variants. For a while went back and forth between Vettes and P-cars. As stated above, the Vette is pretty plastic-ally but brutally fast (at least our old Lingenfelter S/C one was). I think the P is WAY better constructed and prefer it as a DD than a Vette, even tho the newest P-car we own is an '86. I've "settled" in on the P as my car of choice. Still tons of depreciation coming on that new Z. You're lucky to have these kind of decisions! Have fun with whatever you choose to do.

My uncle has a z06. Loves it, well, everything except the cost of the tires. He has them insured they are so expensive.
I don't know the tire size in the 997TT, but I'd research the cost first. It may or may not be a factor. I sure wouldn't want to use it as a Daily driver on tire cost alone.

aigel 04-18-2016 08:33 AM

I'd go with the Z06. Hell of a car. It will depreciate quicker than the Porsche, but you probably save on parts ...

Let me know when you are ready to sell the Porsche. I may be interested. :)
