The biggest automotive mistake of my life was selling my E28 M5. That car was darn near perfect (other than the brake rotor consumption).

Sometimes you'll find yourself weeding through a lot of young'uns' comments/posts here, but you can find what you're looking for with a little perseverance:

5 Series (E12, E28, E34, E39, E60, E61)

JYL,
I'm Eddie's friend in Seattle with the 535iS.

It's getting ready to sell, not yet listed. Here are a few things about it.
1987, 5 speed 134,000 on clock. Salmon Silver.
US car with Euro bumpers, headlights, Hartge front spoiler with e34 M5 throwing stars.
Motor built, ~35k mi. Miller MAF, Schrick cam, balanced, ported, etc. Spec clutch. diff is OS Giken. Battery relocated to trunk with OEM M5 trim.
Coilovers w camber plates, custom Bilsteins, adj. sway-bars, adj. rear subframe, Scheel front seats, e24 M6 rear buckets (2+2) all in gray leather with Alcantara inserts. Fronts have pocket for 5pt harness. Factory glass moon roof insert. New windshield.
Most interior is M5 dyed black, factory euro option leather dash, door caps and B pillars. Kenwood deck with BT, front usb, upgraded speakers, amp...
AC blows cold, occasional fan noise.

That's me in front on the corkscrew above.

I need to take current pictures.

Walt

The OP listed 535i does have character but don't count on escaping the usual wear and tear. How much $$ is needed to keep it up? Since it was mentioned you no longer want to wrench or DIY, steer clear from BMW franchise and find a good independent. You'll still dump money into it but shouldn't be too bad.

They do suck fuel though. The eta motor 528 would be less entertaining but grunt along just fine. I wouldn't mind one of those slugs today. As for the A/C.... not the most efficient. I recall those days but maybe its just me and others had better luck. Probably would look into a complete upgrade in that topic.

As for an '88 M5. Sign me up, even with the extra maintenance.

Good luck!

Given the pricing of early M5s, can you build one from a 535i for less cash, more time invested? I missed out on one for $10K a few years ago.

Depending on your state or city EPA controls, one possible benefit is escaping emission test. No OBD to fit those connectors..lol. When all the OEM stuff on it fails, pull the rest of it. Hollow the cat and insert a thru pipe. Let that 6 banger breath and rev like it should.

How about a clean E23? This is a great example tweaked by Ron Perry.

I sold a friend's 86 to a BMW afficionado and he raved about those big turbo engines. I'll have to ask him again but I think he said there's a ton of hp to be had in them.

Know this isn't even on the radar, but I drove one of these for almost 8 years as a daily driver up until 5 years ago. Took it up to about 180k and sold it because I got long hood fever and bought a 73.5. Couldn't keep both. But smile per mile an S2 was by far the most fun care to drive I have ever experienced.

All I can say is go drive one!!!
porsche 944 s-2

MAKE SURE THERE ARE RECEIPTS & THE BELT AND ROLLERS HAVE BEEN DONE.
My S2 got around 30mpg, had the std 911 electric heated seats and the AC was very effective.
