Ordering glasses online

I need to get new glasses. Found a frame I like online, not available in stores since it's an older design. on this site http://www.novo-eyewear.com

Can you trust online eyewear sellers for top quality lenses? My lenses are almost 3X the cost of the frames.

nvr2mny 06-17-2016 06:56 AM

Never ordered lenses online, so not sure. Not sure I'd trust them to get it right and service might be a challenge. Why not just take the frames to your local optician? Yes, lenses, depending on all the "options" can get stupid expensive. Sorry, not much help.

I have been buying from zenni optical on-line for years with no problem, just need to be certain you have your prescription (with PD) exactly right.
Note that I'm cheap and zenni is a discount frame provider but I'm tough on frames so I don't spend a lot on them.
Also note your link is flagged on my computer at as a virus threat.

Can't you just buy the frame and take it to your local opto?

I didn't want to because I wasn't buying frames from them and am not the guy that finds what he likes in a Main Street store and then finds a better price online but then goes back to the store for help. Last company I had consumers did that to my customers/Main Street stores and it would drive them crazy.

But these are old stock not available anymore so my conscience is OK, called my store and they are happy to do it.

My son bought a pair from Warby Parker. Prices are lower than our local optometry shop and quality is on par. They will send you frames to try on for free. Their designs are pretty modern and hipster though.

Thanks, I'm getting these.

I have worn glasses since middle school and added contact lenses in high school. I don't know what "top quality" lenses are - but due to my stronger prescription I buy high index lenses with anti-glare coating.

I bought my most recent glasses online at Warby Parker. They have this great home try on program, pick 6 frames online and they ship them to you free. Try them on for a couple days to see what floats your boat. Return shipping is also free. If none work you can repeat the cycle again. I got my completed glasses in 4-5 days after ordering. Very happy with them and ended up saving ~ $150 from local stores.

Yeah if it's not available locally, should be fine.

I would imagine they will also make money on the checkup and lens.

I liken it to the local gun store. Transaction fees for private transfers, or when a gun you want isn't on their shelf and they can't order.

We have a local optician who my wife uses and I've used as well. He doesn't have a huge frame selection and has no problem with us bringing frames to him to put lenses in. He is an independent, less corporate sort of guy. She bought her last frames at Costco and had him do everything else.

I got these from Old Focals in Pasadena. The whole process was a piece of cake. Excellent service and they've held up well compared to Mrs. Sarc's Warby Parker pair. YMMV.

Good question Shan. I was wondering about that as well. I like those rimless eyeglasses by Silhouette however, they all seem come in sizes to large for my head.
I found some from a manufacturer I never heard before tho they are available at the same online outfit the sells the Silhouette brand.

varmint 06-17-2016 12:52 PM

i bought frames online, then took them to the local independent shop. they had no problem making the lenses.

Brian in VA 06-17-2016 02:44 PM

Yes, they're fine. I bought some from some place (real helpful I know) and my wife used frames direct I think, all are great. More variety than in store, a little less expensive. Warby ones seemed really cheaply made to me but maybe it was just the styles I tried.

A930Rocket 06-17-2016 04:01 PM

I've ordered a few pairs from Zenni. No problem except one time I entered a prescription number wrong. I think you can send in your prescription to avoid any errors.

flatbutt 06-17-2016 04:04 PM

I've used Zenni and they're fine provided your 'script is spot on, especially the distance between your pupils. It has to be exact because ain't no way to get a fitting done.

Check out

They're $89 and pretty stylish. Good quality for the money.

targa911S 06-18-2016 05:21 AM

I have bought from Zenni and eyebuydirect several times. Just make sure you have all your measurements and you will be pleased. As a person who has worn glasses since age 8 it's wonderful to be able to buy glasses so affordably through these outlets. I have 4 pairs of glasses and 4 pair of sunglasses now.

Seahawk 06-18-2016 05:48 AM

I like the style, Shaun.

I by the sunglasses I like online and take them to the local place I have used for many years. They refit the prescription lenses no problem.
