Actually, I think 3rd Worldliness has crept into the decision-making. We know corruption is already there.
Ironically, most Olympic-hosting cities sustain huge financial losses. The Olympics is a money funnel. Maybe the name should be changed to the Olympic Global Initiative or to the Run, Jump and Swim Foundation. |

You could be out somewhere with family at a fine eatery, hoping to have decency time but you'll see young girls with skirts above the waist soliciting just outside the establishment. You get the peep show regardless who you may be with. Harmless but simply goes to show anything goes with very little to no patrolling. They don't care. As for the Olympics, I don't know but my concerns would be less about the lacking infrastructure and rather be more about the safety. I think the state of Rio had largely budgeted for security but wouldn't doubt they end up cutting it short or rather 'wing it'. Not fear mongering but this is one time to really step up beyond casual security. |
Why stop there?

And the entire Russian track and field team will be barred, possibly some other Russian teams too.

IOC is incredibly corrupt and has thus far only attempted to deflect or downplay the issues. Until there is some serious change in that organization we will continue to have these be a crapshow. Sochi fails was an entertaining topic, guess Rio fails is next.

I remember the Australian swim team moaning about the uncovered Olympic Pool in Athens and how the wind just howls through it.
Of course that all changed when they starting winning gold in it. lol ;) |
I read in an ESPN article this morning that there have been 49 cops killed year to date in Rio. The city is basically broke and is having trouble paying public employees including police, some of whom are protesting outside the airport. Insert 500,000 guests from around the world and an international tv audience, what could possibly go wrong?

I was living in Chicago when they were making their 2016 bid. Interesting to think the IOC thought this would be better than Chicago, Madrid, or Tokyo.

I'm truly glad Boston had the sensibility to withdraw from consideration. This city is many things but a world-class destination it ain't. The transportation infrastructure here makes Rio and Sochi look great and the biggest support for it was from the heads of a handful of local developers salivating at the prospect of cushy contracts on the public dime. Total sham and it would've been a schyteshow. At least we don't have Zika though (not yet!)
