Rio Olympics

With 5 weeks to go, it seems that only one venue is actually complete, and most of the infrastructure projects still need to be finished. Brazil and Rio are both having financial problems and political crises. Workers are going fast to finish.

Last night I was looking at the pictures of unfinished temporary grandstands at the out door venues, open pits next to walkways with exposed utilities, and the unfinished subway and bus stations. (Can't find the article now. I'll keep looking.) I can't help but think even if everything does get finished, it will probably be rushed and unsafe. I hate to say it, but I think some spectators are likely to get seriously injured at the Rio Olympics.

It's going to be a disaster, unfortunately. Sochi will look luxurious in comparison.

Gogar 06-29-2016 07:36 AM

Yes, but the IOC will firm handedly make sure the television audience only sees games and cutaway shots of some nice Brazilian butts playing volleyball on the beach. "Beautiful Brasil!"

What is a little raw sewage and super bacteria going to hurt?

Why, yes, I think I will have a bit of Super Bug with my Zika, gracias!

I know there is no way this could happen... but they could switch to Los Angeles... we already have everything built. (and no raw sewage)

Part of the deal is... The country that hosted the last Olympics has to be ready for the next just in case they have to switch it at the last minute.

Do you think London is ready or even able?

I'm OK with that. SmileWavy

Wait, we're talking the chicks' butts, right?

These concerns come up all the time... Remember Greece? Russia? They tend to be completely overblown.

That being said, it's hard to imagine a worse place to hold the olympics right now...

If I had free all expense paid tickets I would not go.

Crowbob 06-29-2016 08:30 AM

Zika, dysentery and syphilis aside, if the stands collapse or the Religion of Peace strikes again it will not be the fault of the IOC. You can count on that.

Oh boy....

I've visited Brazil about 10 times in the past 25 years, with many stops in Rio. The work ethic and quality of craftsmanship is absolutely appalling. Brazilians, especially those in Rio, have zero interest in working. Hanging out at the beach or ripping off tourists are the only priorities. The airport is the same old shoddy place I first flew into 25 years ago. Its a complete mess, and must be an embarrassment to the country. Traffic is insane, and I doubt the metro extension will be completed in time. I have high hopes that they can pull this off, but I'm a bit pessimistic.

They could always switch to Mumbai!

This is what happens when people make decisions based on criteria like "maximizing inclusiveness" and "promoting diversity" rather than an objective assessment of who's actually qualified to do a given job.

Sound familiar?

Sound familiar?

And a dash of corruption. Look at Qatar and FIFA.

The chaos could increase TV viewership. I would be more inclined to watch the marathon coverage now that there is a chance that a mugging of an athlete could occur during the race. They may set some new records. How about the cycling be done only on bikes that were stolen. Lots of opportunity if they think outside the box.

Olympic Committee meeting, circa 2006:

"Let's have the 2016 Olympics in a third world country!"

"Yeah, that's the ticket!"

Arizona_928 06-29-2016 11:24 AM

Yep^^
Didn't they bribe for it?
