If it is what it sounds like to me, your symptoms are mitigated by better support because it prevents your heel from everting, which unlocks your midfoot, allows your arch to collapse and as the foot flattens out, the nerve at the inside of your ankle. If you wear supportive shoes with decent off the shelf supports, Superfeet for example, and use them consistently, I suspect it will significantly mitigate your problems.

Dan, that is actually not a bad description of what is done for osteochondritis dessicans and the result of the treatment

My wife and I have been planning on a few backpacking trips this summer, but I'm pulling the plug on any multi-day hikes. A couple day hikes will suffice.
