Is it time to upgrade my Motarola bag phone yet? I bought my mom a 5s earlier this year for $200, but didn't care for it myself. Got myself an android (even less)...upgrade....not until they croak .

I used to get a "free" upgrade every 2 years.
Now, I will upgrade every 2 years with last year's model for under $300
I use it every day so I want the best.

Me too... however for around $99-$150 you can get a decent Android that will GPS you to any address you can speak into it... and find the closest restaurant/coffee shop/pool hall in any new town you may stumble into... plus the ability to check your email.

My wife is infuriated that I turn_my_phone_off... I know when I have to be in touch with the outside world... and more importantly when I don't.

Mind you if money were no object I would be toting a $600 Android... around in my new Porsche.

Brace yourselves, I have a technology confession. I won't even zip up the flame suit. My first real "smart phone/device" was a Blackberry, for business. Since most of my usage is text and email, there are times when I miss the tactile feel of the Blackberry keyboard. I know it was noisy (click...click...tap) and very mechanical with that trackball, but it felt good to me and I think I was faster on it. I know that even RIM eventually moved to a touchscreen keyboard with one of the Torch models, but...

Whew, that felt good to get off my chest...I think!

I loved the BlackBerry, starting with the original pager sized one that I wore in a belt holster like every other investment geek. I stuck with BlackBerry through the 957 (?) and finally switched to iPhones with the 3rd gen. I hated the on screen keyboard and still would, except that Swype finally came to iOS.

T-Mobile announced an upgrade plan for the iPhone 7.

Trade in a 6 or 6S and get the 7 32 GB plus a $650 credit divided over 24 months which coincidently is the same amount per month as if you pick up the phone on terms.

I may have to make a call tomorrow.

My kids are great at Swype, but I finally gave up on it. I'm all thumbs!

I feel dumb - what is the deal? I looked at the T mobile page and I didn't understand it. If I have a 6, and want a 64GB 7 . . .

I got an iPhone 6 after owning a BB for 5 years. Honestly, the BB was the best business phone I ever had. Having the iPhone for about a year, I under use it but I appreciate the photo capability and a few of the apps I have.

I have no desire to just run out and by the next latest and greatest.

I guess we're a little unusual, at least in the crowd that's responding. I think the missus and I go 3-5 years between upgrades. It depends upon how the phone is running.

I guess my last personal "upgrade" went from my Samsung Galaxy S3 to the S6. My daughter is on the Galaxy S5 (her first phone), and we're not fond of that one at all. So maybe she will move to the S7? I might see how long I can remain on my S6, although I must admit that the battery life isn't what it once was.

I go about 18-24 months in between upgrades. After owning a couple of iPhones, I made the switch to Android back in 2013 and haven't looked back. I currently have the latest Google phone and love it. It is carrier agnostic, has no bloat of any kind, and I am on a month to month plan.

With my new phone, I'm on a 30 day replacement cycle.

I've been on a Samsung 2-year replacement cycle, but this year broke that cycle. Bought a Motorola X pure Edition which is almost identical to the Galaxy Note for $250 out right. Now I can go to any carrier and I pay much less per month for coverage. And Verizon no longer owns me for 2 years. Verizon charges me $20 less because I'm out of contract and $20 less for my wife so we're saving $480 per year or about a $1,000 over those two years. My new phone has better battery and Rapid charge. In fact I stopped traveling with my iPad because my phone actually lasts all day and a 10-minute charge will give me another 20% in battery.

Alternatively, he has no need for a smart phone, I don't.

Everywhere I go, there is a computer. I don't travel enough to need to have it show me the nearest Armenian-Thai fusion restaurant in an unfamiliar town. I borrowed one once when I was taking a trip, turned out the only time I looked at it was when I was being called or calling someone.

About the only thing I can imagine "needing" one for, is to do e-prescribing of narcotics, but I think that is a bad idea, and am not interested in pursuing it.

You have no clue what smartphones are capable of if you think they are simply an internet computer in your pocket. For example, GPS has enabled an entirely new paradigm of computing. No, not for simply maps, but for any app that is able to know your location and create logic around that.
