I am still kicking myself for selling my 1987 syncro. One of the funnest vehicles I have ever owned.

I looked at Synchros, but my kids like the looks of the bay window buses more, so that is what we went with, a 78 Westy.

What?

I've got an 85 tin top vanagon, not a syncro. Putting a hightop on it and a Subaru 3.3. Gonna do a full custom camper.

In SA we have the Cox camper conversion, a high top styled on the Westy. For know I wanted a bus that could also be used for family outings and not an all out camper.
The idea is over time, as the family move away and we get to retirement, to let it grow into a camper according to our needs. For now I've cut and turned the middle bench and fitted a fridge. ![]() ![]() |

An addition to our camping life I scored from a friend the other day... the kitchen box. We live outside the Kombi and when Wify and I go tripping we remove the middle bench. The box stands in the door and gets moved outside when in use.
It opens up to give a working table, basin and the gas stove fits on the right hand lid, plus packing space for the kitchen stuff. The rest of our stuff is stored in ammo boxes. ![]() ![]() |

Nice! Just got back a few hours ago from two nights out in the syncro, had my parents sleeping in the bottom berth, 3 year old sleeping in our special hammock bed above the front seats, and me and the wife up top. Temps in the low 40s but have a propex so we were snug. That makes 16 nights out since we bought it in January, not so shabby!
