Crossbow under $500?
I've never bow hunted, but man....I've got the urge. Yeah, thanks Vonsmog!
The season is already open here in OH, and goes until January.Lots of cheap options, but reviews are all over the place. Can anyone recommend a rig under $500? I've seen setups for less than $300. This would be for whitetail only. Last edited by HardDrive; 10-04-2016 at 04:29 PM.. |

Make sure the laws are the same for crossbows and bows (same seasons etc.).
Any reason why you are not getting a compound or other type of bow and looking at a crossbow? Bill |

Yeah check to make sure cross bow is legal. In az you have to have a doctor sign off on it. And at that point you mind as well get a rifle. Compound is more thrill...

Crossbows are legal for all in OH. My dad has a good PSE compound bow. I don't have time for the learning curve.

HardDrive,
Sorry so late just saw this post, sorry I got you interested in bow hunting! I have a Horton crossbow that I got off of Craig's list for $250 a few years ago. I would much rather use that than the bow, but here in NY you can only use the crossbow the last two weeks of bow season. So check out some used ones on Craig's list, I bet there are a bunch of them this time of year.

the learning curve for a compound is pretty fast. really fast. you midwest guys get all those short shots from treestands and ground blinds. 20 yards is the norm from what i heard. 20 yards is low hanging fruit. i think my first ever bow shot at 20 yards was in the bulls.
with the modern mechanical broadheads on the market, even "tuning" the bow is not a huge endeavor. i vote you go with a bow, but i'm biased. the simple act of lifting a bow and drawing it back within earshot, eyeshot, nose-shot of a whitetail will get your adrenalin rushing. it's when most of us get busted. good times!!

So are there brands names to look for? Or brand names to look out for and avoid? There's tons on CList with prices all over the place.
