Similar story here...

I parked my street bicycle 'bout 30 years ago because of where I Iived at the time...didn't feel comfortable mixing with cars anymore.

Similar with my '87 Sportster...never had anything else with a HD logo, mostly liked to ride alone, and just hit the backroads and enjoy myself. As time passed, more cars, cell phones, and those backroads even became conjested too . The Harley began to gather dust and I just no longer felt comfortable mixing with lots of cell phone drivers....I reckon I simply lost my nerve, and it was no longer fun, but an exercize in survival.

Sold the Sporty earlier this year to a buddy who lives in rural south GA....if I lived on my rural property (and I plan to some day), I'd probably still ride. Most of my buddies who used to ride in metro areas have parked or sold theirs too. Growing older may suck but it beats the hell out of the other option

Ride safe.....

You even look at that ad closely?

That's the last thing he needs.

no adolecent dirt bike time = hospital time or worse. it is not like the old days any more, more traffic density and more distractions added to the general population that just doesn't give a dam if they run you over. so bmw r90. older the better.

A friend of mine headed up one of the local instruction programs for many years. He told me that more than a few students came up to him after a course and thanked him for allowing them to realize that riding was not for them.

I'm noticing that I had far more fun riding on the street years ago...before cell phones.
Now I have to be so much more vigilant - head on a swivel - that I spend more time on that than on my experience of the joy of riding.
But when I'm on an open road I relax and drink up the pure pleasure of listening to the bike, perfecting my clean up and down shifting, etc.
Just digging the mechanism of the machine.
I'll even get a hair up my butt and go out close to midnight and ride the expressways and foothill roads...very little traffic.

Girlfriend enjoyed her ten days with a scooter in Rarotonga so came home and bought a Honda PCX150 for commuting to work. She works in town where parking is silly expensive so the lure of free parking was a big attraction. She is riding to survive ie no lane splitting, has done a course and intends to do more training, and she isn't silly. So I'm hoping she will be OK. She used to have a motorbike as a teen so that helps.

Haven't read this whole thread but surprised everyone is suggesting a new Bonnie.

I would love a new Bonnie for myself, but don't think I would point a first time rider at one... I would suggest something in a 500cc or less (edit to ad I see others are agreeing with that)

I'm not sure of the hate for this guy. Everyone here also bought their first 911 and their first motorcycle without having much of a clue.
Not hate, surprised you are so offended at our concern for your friends safety.
