I'm Calling "B.S."

Trooper claims he had this kid doing 208 mph in a 2011 Mustang. No way in hell, unless it fell down a mineshaft or something.

19-year-old in custody after driving over 200 mph during pursuit | KOMO

911 Rod 11-15-2016 08:54 AM

Sounds like the pursuit vehicle clocked him. What are the cops driving?

sand_man 11-15-2016 08:54 AM

SHEEESH! Was the kid driving this :D:D

A quick YouTube search shows a 2011 gt500 doing 190 on the autobahn. 208 is absolutely ludicrous. A 2013 Hennessy modified barely achieved that on a controlled test. He should actually be able to get this thrown out.

pwd72s 11-15-2016 09:43 AM

Yeah, the GT500 had a claimed 200mph top end..but to really do it? Yeah, I also call BS. Although one magazine was able to almost get 200 on a track in very controlled conditions...

GH85Carrera 11-15-2016 09:46 AM

A Carrera GT will do 205. Made of a carbon fiber tub and built by the factory to go that fast. A 918 only does 210 or so. It is silly to think he could do 208 in a steel Mustang. If he had over 1,000 HP and new gears and some big aerodynamic wings I doubt he could do 208.

The cops have the idiot arrested for felony eluding and reckless driving. They did not even charge the speeding ticket from what I saw. The car was impounded and the idiot 19 year old will have a lot of points. He should lose his license for a while.

"200 miles an hour ... That is extremely fast," Timmons said.

No schite, Sherlock.

Canadian County....maybe they are using KPH...

McLovin 11-15-2016 10:10 AM

My Maserati does 185,

and we know a Mustang is faster than a Maserati.

So seems plausible.

icemann427 11-15-2016 10:17 AM

Canada does use KPH, so 208 KPH is about 129 MPH

BlueSkyJaunte 11-15-2016 10:19 AM

What a steaming pile.

If he was going 208 mph--with his lights off, no less--how exactly did they catch him?

You do know it was in Canadian county, Oklahoma. Part of Oklahoma City and the metro area. It was not measured in KPH. The speed limit on the turnpike he was on is 70 MPH. Even if the RADAR was off by 100 MPH he was into triple digits. That is reckless driving.

Even more rare than 200 mph road going cars are 200 mph public roads. Anyone who has ever driven at high speed on our public roads will tell you how quickly you become limited by the road itself. A perfectly smooth highway at 70 mph can be almost completely un-drivable at twice that. If this was keeping a 2011 Mustang on the road at even 70% of what is claimed, he has a bright future in a Cup car...

rwest 11-15-2016 01:42 PM

At very high speeds it is hard to get accurate numbers; time goes by so fast that a slight error effects readings enormously.

230 or 250 on that Mustang scale.

masraum 11-15-2016 04:21 PM

If it was modified, with serious power, it's possible. HIGHLY UNLIKELY, but very slightly possible.

Way back in the day, I was a member of Rennlist (email list, not bulletin board). I'm pretty sure it was one of the guys from Imagine Auto that told the story that some cop had busted him for speeding in his Porsche, but wrote that he was going 240mph. When he got to court he had the numbers of gearing etc... to show that 240 was absolutely not possible in his car on this planet. The ticket was thrown out.

IF the Mustang could actually go that fast. The cop car, even if it was a Dodge Charger (a lot in OKC are), could not accelerate quick enough to keep the Mustang from getting out of radar range.

But what if the cop car was . . . a Mustang?

Then it would take so long for it to get up to the speed limit, let alone any sort of pursuit speed that the perpetrator would be long gone.

Bet they didn't give em a speeding ticket so he wouldn't have it to frame and hang in the garage.

I was thinking it was him, but I wasn't sure. Wasn't there another guy, maybe named Michael that was a big part of IA with Stephen?

No mention if they found wooden blocks duct-taped to the pedals ........

You obviously underestimate Mustangs, shame on you.

I don't think stock gearing would get him there regardless of the power he has.

I wouldn't assume that with any modern high perf V-8 car. Most of the big American muscle cars these days have 6 speed transmissions with very aggressive overdrive gears (usually 2 or 3 of them). A 2011 mustang is no different. Granted, you'd need a ton of power to do it, but, a stock 2011 Mustang GT has a 7000 rpm limit. One of the stock rear gears was 3.31:1 (3.55 and 3.73
were also options). The 6th gear in the stock 6 speed transmission is .65:1 which gives a final gear ratio of 2.15:1. (all from Internet searchs)

With that gearing, if you had whatever power was required to push past the aero, and the suspension and tires and place to do it, theoretically, the mustang should top out at about 265mph. (using 3 different calculators from the 'Net).

So, stock gearing could theoretically get you well over 208.

I went ahead and did the calcs for 3.55 and 3.73 rear gears too.

245mph - 3.55 in 6th at redline

234mph - 3.73 in 6th at redline.

If he had 4.10:1 aftermarket rear gears swapped in, his theoretical top speed in 6th gear at redline would be 212mph.

RKDinOKC 11-16-2016 05:08 PM

My experiences has been that at about 110mph is usually when the aerodynamics of and automobile starts effecting how much horsepower is required to increase speed. It is not really just gearing that limits the higher speeds.

In discussions of how fast car go I've heard people quote the gearing top speeds. I then asked them how fast they driven the car. It was usually much lower than their quoted top speed. When I asked why they usually say they were afraid for on reason or another to take it any faster. Tell them the fastest speed their car goes is the fastest speed they are willing to drive it.

For example years ago when I still had the immortality of youth I had a BoxsterS. Porsche quoted it's top speed at 168mph. Over 125 it started getting twitchy and at 140 it was down right scary enough so I would NOT even attempt to drive it any faster. So despite the factory quoted top speed of 168 the actual top speed was 140.

Geneman 11-16-2016 05:09 PM

lets send that perp sheet to the transition team.. they may need hector..

I'd say that you're correct. Most of the cars that I've driven have had the power to get to around 100-115, although I have driven a car or two that topped out in the 90s and 1 that topped out at about 65-70mph.

My old '88 targa did once hit redline in 5th gear which should be around 150mph. It was a little floaty. It was running on good, but old shocks and had a front but no rear spoiler which wasn't ideal.

I haven't yet had or taken the opportunity to test the Boxster. I think I've been in the 130-140mph range, but can't remember exactly. I'm usually either on roads in town or have the missus along. Neither of those factors are conducive of high speed runs. My car's got the PASM suspension and supposedly tops out at 170 or 171. I'd like to try it sometime, but who knows when/if I'll ever get the chance.
