The difference between in-laws and outlaws... outlaws are wanted. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving otherwise.

Had a place hire a bar tender that must be the clone of your MIL.
I just started finding out when she was working, and would arrange my schedule to not be there. A little frustrating. I just can not understand how some people feel the need to force objects down, they'll get there gradually, and a lot quieter if you apply a slowing force towards the end. Bartender broke the bottom out of the freakin' sink one time! I probably do have some hearing issues from working in a machine shop, sudden noises are a lot sharper/startling to me than when I was younger. At least its not their voice. About as bad as slamming utensils and pans is a female that breaks out in excited exclamations that end up sounding like the demented screeching of a banshee.(Over things like how cute their new selfie turned out, etc.)

This year was wonderful for us. Grandsons are old enough to be fun, I had a fun conversation with brothers and sisters. Our goofy neighbor brought her dog over for us to dog sit while she was with her family and the dog is a joy. But the neighbor acts like your MIL. She just can't seem to do anything right. In all, it was a great day!

My Mom passed away 6 years ago. Now at age 96, still sharp as a tack mentally but going through congestive heart failure, my Dad was recently "placed" in hospice by two of my out of town siblings that didn't tell him before they signed him up. I've spent my entire life of 53 years very close to my Dad. I consider him my best friend. The siblings aren't worth shooting. So I get the call yesterday from my brother that Dad requested we all be together at his home (without him of course) for Thanksgiving dinner. I told my brother I could care less about having lunch with the siblings. Fired up the 911SC and took an hour and a half drive up the Natchez Trace and then sat at a roadside nature area listening to nature for a few minutes before returning home. Dad calls me at 10 last night before getting his "pain pill" to go to sleep and says he is an emotional wreck that had a bad day. I told him yeah, those people will do that to you and that's why I did my own Thanksgiving.

I often tell my wife that one of these days we will stay home for Thanksgiving. Drove two hours to my in-laws' and stayed for two days, driving two hours home today, then driving two hours tomorrow to spend Saturday/Sunday at my parents' house. Ugh. I wish I lived further away.....

Nice quiet Thanksgiving. I always do the turkey so I'm in the kitchen early, then get my ass out so the sides can be made. The bird came out exceptional if I do say so myself...

We had a simple & enjoyable holiday - just the two of us. Went out to a quality restaurant for dinner and to a Cirque de Soliel show. Today I'll look around for a turkey to cook so I'll have left over turkey.

Just the wife, the cats, and I for turkey day... my brother lives a few miles away and loves to cook so we usually do it at his house but my wife said "I can't stand all the noise and chaos" (I think she may have a touch of the holiday blues).
That and I'm on the low carb diet and needless to say the traditional thanksgiving feast is not very low carb.

It's myself, wife, daughter on Thanksgiving. This year we had a three day tapas theme.
Thanksgiving tapas observations and musings. First, we did not experience the usual Thanksgiving meal feelings of, "Oh, man, I ate too much", stuffed feeling. Tapas are small. Intimate. We found that none of the tapas took more than :30 minutes to prepare. We spread the plates over 3-4 hour intervals. During the intermissions we went for walks, and sat on our dock and decks overlooking the lake. We discussed topics of importance relating to philosophy, anthropology, politics, family, travel, art, music, literature, and spirituality. We enjoyed world-class libations and music. We took naps. We bought and installed a Christmas tree. We worked on college application essays with our daughter. We prayed together, reflected and planned. We embraced tapas and its lifestyle of taking time to enjoy time. It was three days of de-shackling the trappings of tradition and enjoying each other with time returned to us by breaking away from the "traditional" Thanksgiving kitchen. We highly recommend this. Example dish: chorizo and toast with tomato/onion salad

Our kitchen is usually quiet, and mostly organized until my FIL shows up. he is a loud talker and considers everything a "teaching moment". As soon as he walks in, supreme exectutive power shifts from my strong willed, but fairly quiet wife to him. He needs to assess everything in progress, and seems to have to put his touch on it as well.
I am a big helper in the kitchen.....until he shows up, then I gracefully bow out to save my sanity. |
