Best bacon ever! Benton's

Hickory Smoked.

Last year I ordered some. It was the best bacon I've ever had, very intensely smoky. That's when we discovered that the missus isn't really a fan of intensely smoked meats.

Hell, even the cardboard box that the bacon came in smelled more smokey than the bacon that you buy in the store.

I also discovered that you need to eat this stuff pretty darn quickly. It doesn't last forever in the refrigerator like the crap that you get at the grocery store.

Country Hams, Benton's Country hams, townsend, tn,hams, Country bacon, Bacon, smoky mountains, smoky mountain hams

I suspect their ham is also pretty good.

Apparently, the bacon dries for several weeks (seems to be around 4-8 weeks per several different videos and websites. Per one place on the website the hams age anywhere from 8-24 months, but where you buy them on their website says 12-14 months. The hams spend 3 days in the smokehouse and the bacon spends either 2 or 3 depending upon what you read/hear.

I watched all of the seasons of Mind of a Chef that were on Netflix. I wasn't happy when they took it off of Netflix. We ordered the bacon almost exactly a year ago after we watched that episode.

I just ordered 2 bags of Carolina Gold from Anson Mills. It's $6.95 for a single 14oz bag, or if you buy a 10lb bag, then it's $69.50. So it's $8/lb if you buy a small bag and $7/lb if you buy a big one. Yeah, that's still pricey, especially if you're used to buying the 50# bags from the Asian grocery store. We figured we'd give it a try. You have to buy 4 bags if you don't buy 10#, so we also bought some of their "Sea Island Red Peas" and some of their antebellum, coarse ground, yellow corn meal.

We probably don't eat as much rice as you do.

I saw the episode with the bacon, looked very good!I wouldn't mind ordering a ham, maybe for Easter.

What you need to order is "Craigster59's Burn Your B-hole Beef Jerky". As Andy Griffith would say "It's g-o-o-o-d!". Only $6.95 an ounce and a roll of TP is included with every order! J?K, what did you think of it Vash?

Is what good, the rice? I don't know. I literally just ordered it on Sun. FedEx says it's going to arrive on Thu.

Those Benton hams look good! And reasonable for a "gourmet" product, I like the aged one, like a proscuitto. And at $72 that's less than I pay for my blood pressure medicine! I'm definitely ordering one, I'll let you know when it arrives.

Cool, the missus has talked about ordering one which seems weird, but I have told her that they have some that aren't smoked (who knows why!)

Let us know what you think when you get it.

Nothing beats bacon in versatility. Excellent food. Should be served at every muslim restaurant.

I've bought Benton's bacon (peppered bacon, I think) from Zingerman's over the years and I like it a lot.

Since we've already branched out into rice and are sort of on a southern theme, I will recommend Logan Turnpike Mill in north Georgia for grits (and other stone-ground-grain products). Terrific product and reasonably priced. Easy to find in some supermarkets in Atlanta, but you can mail-order it from anywhere. When I took my 911 up to the Tail the day after I bought it, I found myself driving right by their storefront by accident, somewhere up past Dahlonega.

I can refer you to the savory oatmeal thread.

I like just about any bacon, and will eat Spam even, when we are on the go and can't cook. I can not imagine what sort of heaven this ham would be from. I need to find a place that serves them.

Steve, can't you freeze it? I have a deep freezer and it's just me and the GF. Bulk meat on sale gets repackaged and into the deep freeze....other wise full retail.

Yeah, you can freeze it. We just didn't initially realize that it wasn't like the grocery store crap until we had to throw out 1/2# which sucked.
