E46 Bimmer? I've even seen E36 M3s for under $4K.

I sold my last one for $2500 and it wasn't that bad.

As it was the night I sold it.

Ill tell you what, I think the mid 80's cameros and firebirds are tops, good gm reliability, good looks, easy to hot-rod, and a kitted one will turn heads, with a nice exhaust system!

This car looks very much like my 2004 triple black 40 anniversary edition Mustang GT convertible that I drive every day......lots of fun with 260 HP, full leather, Mach 460 stereo, and top down on sunny days. I traded a 1995 Saturn sedan and $1000 for it. it has 145,000 miles, runs great (14.5 @ 97 MPH at Norwalk), and everything works well. It does have an off color fender from a fender bender, and the driver's door needs new hinges, but I really like my $2500 muscle car....especially compared to that Saturn.

If it's gotta be domestic, here's some interesting options....

Mercury Marauder
SVT Focus
SVT Contour
Crown Vic
Mercury Cougar
Cadillac STS V8
Old school domestic wagon with a big block
Typhoon or Syclone - might be too much
SVO Mustang turbo
Fiero V6

I had one of these, 1990 Super Coupe. It had a supercharged v6 engine mated to a 5 speed. It never let me down in the 7 years I had it.

E36 M3 is now a $10,000 car, assuming you don't want one that needs $20k of work.
Hell, you can't even get an E36 base for $4k, unless you get one that needs $20k of work.

Forget muscle, any car, period, for $2k to 4k is going to be crap.
You know what you get for $4k? A rusted dented trashed Honda with 357,000 miles.

$4k won't get you a Fox body, they're priced out of your range.
Unless you get one that needs $20k of work.

$4k does not get you a Boxster, unless you get a real turd.

The only thing I can think of that isn't total garbage at $4k is
Mustang Fourth generation (1994–2004)
Miata

Thanks for the inupt, It is gonna be really hard to beat a stang for my criteria . I just had a buddy offer to trade his 40th aniv. Vette for our Boxster. Tempting, but I really want a back seat so all of us, plus the dumb dog can use it .
I worked on a bunch of sho cars back in the day, they were interesting. The super coupe is something I had not thought about, they were pretty cool also, and interesting for their time .
Will I have to get a new pool que if I grab one ?
I had an 86 fox body vert as a winter beater a few years back. It if would have had a shifter, I probably would have kept it .
