LOL, if a $35k MSRP Saleen with 300hp on a 3000lb body is an underpowered overhyped POS, then what does that make your $45k air cooled 911 with 200hp on a 2800lb body?

Exactly what year saleen mustang are you referring to?

I specifically said a saleen from the 80's. You saw that right? This is what I posted:

Saleen mustang from the 80's = take a stock low powered car, glue a skirt kit on it and some cheep plastic pin-striping.
Custom seat covers, cut down springs, and double the price. Voila!!!!

over-hyped under-powered POS.
The 1984 moostang had 175 hp.
The 1985 moostang had a V8 with 165 hp, the GT with manual had 210 but was not available everywhere.
1986 moostang GT had 200 hp.
The 1988 moostang GT was up to 225 hp.

None of em had 300 hp stock though .............. and they all weighed more than 3000 lbs.

In 1984 Steve Saleen began converting the Ford Mustang, into what he believed, was the ultimate road car. The concept was simple. Improve on the features that he felt Ford had overlooked. In 1984 Saleen was able to manufacturer three of his Saleen Mustangs. Stu Akers of Indiana currently owns all three examples. Two of the three have received full concourse restorations. The third, which was involved in terrible engine fire, is currently receiving the same restoration and is near completition.

Enter the 1985 Saleen Mustang. This was the first full year of production for Saleen. As was the case with the three 1984 cars, Saleen concentrated on suspension, aerodynamics, driver comfort, and appearance. No engine modifications were made to the Saleen Mustangs until the unveiling of the 1989 SSC Saleen. With strict EPA guidelines, it was not until 1989 that Saleen was financially capable of having an upgraded engine EPA certified
And $35k for an $18k moostang was a sucker bet all day long.

You can point to an 89 supercharged Saleen if you want to (292 hp, still not 300), but suggesting it is representative of a typical 80's saleen would be ...... well it wouldn't be.

PS my 911 had around 275 hp, weighed 2640 lbs, and was only worth around $10k when I got rid of it several years back

Oops, I almost forgot. Saleen put a plastic whale tail on the back of his 80's stock moostangs, and just for GIGGLES he installed a 170 mph speedometer.

On a stock powered mustang.
170.
On a car that struggled to get over 120 mph.
170.
just so the owners could brag about how high their speedometer went.

Eventually his cars evolved into something nice, but for the first decade or so they were a joke.

And the mustang community at the time knew it and often laughed at his cars and the people who were buying these over-priced POS.
I remember, I had a mustang in the early to mid 80's.

'89 SSC Saleen.

AMERICAN. Check.
muscle car. Check.
circa 80's. Check.
Better power to weight ratio than a 3.2 Carrera. Check.

I see no oxymoron here.

I honestly think I enjoy my Mach 1 more than my 997. And that plays into it. The worst case scenario mechanically would not be a terrible financial hit. Blow up a 997S engine....that's gonna hurt. I also think that the Mustang crowd is a bit more affable than the Porsche folks. Are there some young chuckleheads? Yes.

Fast Fred, any updates on the mustang? It really does seem the ultimate value.

2001 Pontiac Firebird Convertible - $3,488

I have been DD a triple black 2004 Mustang GT convertible with those same "Bullet"wheels I got last March with absolutely no problems. I did replace the tires (4 different brands, and ages). The car has 155,000 miles on it now, and I only paid $2500 for it last year.

Bone stock with an automatic trans, it ran 14.6 at 97 MPH at Norwalk (Summit) motorsports park.

It seems to be the best performance value on the road.

This is how I feel about my Jaguar, the faster it depreciates the more I enjoy it.

It lacks the fine interior ergonomics of a Porsche, but at a fraction of the cost its a heck of a lot of car.

A buddy of mine had a 1980s IROC Z28 Camaro with t-tops back in the day. It looked and sounded awesome but with a smog strangled 305, automatic transmission, and a tinkertoy interior the overall experience was underwhelming. I would love to find a notchback 5.0 in minty condition though.
