Sunday evening was the wrong time to make such a request! Hopefully by irrational brethren will chime in tomorrow.
For a "modern" beach buggy, I'd look something like a Polaris RZR 4-seater. If you want something a bit more refined, maybe look into a well-sorted 05-06 Cayenne S. Preferably one with air suspension (this is a P-car forum after all).
You should be able to find a pretty clean example for under $12k. Just make sure the common issues have been addressed, or factor them into the purchase price.
If you want to go full beach-mobile, just add a set of beefy A/T tires and recode the air suspension module to max out the ride height.

Subaru. Take your pick of which one. They'll all do the job.

Have plane and boat and both are equally quirky. The Willy's and Jeepster are awesome choices. I've seen a few running around here and had forgotten about them. Now to see if they fit the budget!

BMW 2002s came with auto transmissions, are reliable when sorted, a solid investment car, and auto box cars are less money than their manual siblings.

Teach your wife some techniques to drift and throttle steer to make the gravel road a bit more fun. Sans kids of course. 12k should buy a nice car that has been well sorted but not restored, Patina!

a slightly used 4 seater side by side could be an option.
