Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. Fight

I'll be working the fight as an official and cannot wait! Although this will be an exhibition fight, I'm not sure Mike will treat it as such. He is a beast and I would not want to be his opponent, even at 54 years old.

It is going to be exciting and I look forward to watching his "rage!"

What do you think about this fight?

Here's hoping Iron Mike still has something in the tank.

Roy Jones was a superior boxer. Defense/offense, he had it. This fight is silly.

I don't think Tyson looks silly...

I'm just glad he's not mad at me.

There's something fearsome about Tyson that was justified in his day. I hope he's got something in his tank, but not expecting anything.

Not saying he is silly, the fight is. He was a good fighter, Holyfield exposed him. Roy Jones was a great in my opinion. Not sure how he fell off so fast.
I like Mike, he really seems like a good person when his meds are on. I’m being serious.

The fight will probably pull in some cash for both of the fighters.
Mike could most likely use some income by now.

Cheers Richard

My understanding is that this is part of a larger effort to create a senior tour sort of thing for retired boxers. Mainly an exhibition format. Could be interesting depending who gets involved'
Sure there is some $$ to be made.

It makes me very sad, on oh so many levels, to see this. Two of my all-time boxing heroes. I'm not even going to watch. I would prefer to remember them as my heroes.

The real impetus for this is the fact that there aren’t any interesting fighters anymore, at least not in the same universe as Mike Tyson and many of his opponents. When I was a child, right up until about the year 2000 or so, champion prize fighters were superstars...everyone knew their names and followed the sport. At least to watch the fights.

Now, I probably could not name one current champion or even contender. I’d bet that is true for 99 out of 100 people on the sidewalk, anywhere. Mike is a good friend from years ago but I’ve lost touch w him in recent years. One of my close friends used to work for him and we would spend hours hanging out in coffee shops and restaurants, I used to talk on the phone w Mike all the time. He’s a sweetheart, really.

Unfortunately MMA killed Boxing. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching MMA, but it doesn't even come close to the kind of energy created by a Heavyweight fight back in the golden era.

Heh heh heh... I love you guys.

Rawkneesturbo and I have had many a gentlemanly exchange over the merits of boxing vs. gay soft porn - also known as MMA "fighting"...

Like I said I enjoy MMA, but the problem is that to be competitive, you cant be a master in any single discipline. You need to be skilled in striking, take downs and grappling, which means you'll probably be highly skilled but not elite in any one category. You can make up for the lack of perfection with physical attributes and God given athleticism.

Now take a top rank boxer like a young Larry Holmes. He was athletic no doubt but it was years of mastering his craft that made him a champion. We also saw this in Royce Gracie, a top level in BJJ but very average in everything else. Unfortunately being top level in one genre wont win a mixed martial fight in 2020.

Of course there are anomalies like Ryan Hall but for the most part the first ingredient in becoming a UFC champion is physical prowess/heart coupled with solid (but not elite) level in all 3 categories.

Ryan Hall is definitely an anomaly and the above doesn't apply to him, but he is an outlier

I dunno, whenever I look at MMA, it looks like a street brawl. And Iron Mike looks ferocious!

I would say that some of the MMA guys have amazing skills including world-class wrestling or grappling skills...there are some former champion wrestlers in that sport. Some are also amazing street fighters but you'll never see a great boxer, that is a skill set that takes years of discipline and training + natural talent.
