Electric Turbo
It wasn't so long ago that we were making fun of leaf blowers connected to the inlet. But it appears the electric boost "booster" does exist at OEM level.

Oh, no. There were serious electric turbo chargers. They typically had their own boost battery and a short term "boost button".
Electric Superchargers No, it was the guys who sold bilge blowers and that kind of junk that we ripped up. The guy selling them was "Vanick" and the product was called e-ram.

The new Volvo XC40 is scheduled to go on sale this February with a 3-cylinder electric turbo, making around 225hp. Also a 4-cylinder conventional turbo version as well.

personally, I think that a hyper-bar configuration would do the same job better.

Volvo is building electric turbocharger/supercharger cars already, came out in 2016 on the XC90.

The turbo is conventional on the XC90.

The engineer in me just cries at the term "electric turbo" when used on automobiles. Dang stupid marketers come up with crappy terms like that.
At least the schematic has it labeled properly. Elektrisch angetriebener verdichter(Electric driven compressor.) |

Thanks guys, the name "E-RAM" was just at the tip of my tongue and bothering me all day
![]() I also like the Porsche 9R9 approach of exhaust-driven turbine for energy recovery. I guess it's MGU-H minus the M. I think it goes nicely with the rest of the hybrid system, and very road-relevant. I remember looking at this photo for the first time and thinking, where the heck is the upper exhaust line going?? For Tervuren, this one I believe they call Abgasenergierückgewinnung or AER ![]()

Electric driven "superchargers" are not turbochargers by definition and typically do not product much boost at all.
They are meant to help the turbos spool much quicker and reduce turbo lag. |

The system may be acting in the opposite that you prescribe. It appears to use a smaller turbo with minimal lag and lower peak output that is in operational boost levels at modest amounts of power, and the electric super charger is kicking in with large right foot applications. Sense the turbo is far more energy efficient than the electric, this results in keeping the energy efficient gains of the turbine, but with additional horsepower at will from the electric super charger. |

I dont think most of us were making fun of electric supercharging, we were making fun of electric supercharging with a bathroom fan impeller driven by a 125w Motor.
i highly doubt the electrically driven compressor is for top end power, even Audi isnt that cray. Electric supercharging makes sense for low mass flow rates of air, great for filling in power while waiting for the main turbo to spool or for decreasing pumping losses while cruising down the highway at low load. I wonder what voltage it runs at? I would think greater than 12 to prevent 100+ amp draws.
