Electric Turbo

It wasn't so long ago that we were making fun of leaf blowers connected to the inlet. But it appears the electric boost "booster" does exist at OEM level.

Oh, no. There were serious electric turbo chargers. They typically had their own boost battery and a short term "boost button".

Electric Superchargers

No, it was the guys who sold bilge blowers and that kind of junk that we ripped up. The guy selling them was "Vanick" and the product was called e-ram.

The new Volvo XC40 is scheduled to go on sale this February with a 3-cylinder electric turbo, making around 225hp. Also a 4-cylinder conventional turbo version as well.

personally, I think that a hyper-bar configuration would do the same job better.

Volvo is building electric turbocharger/supercharger cars already, came out in 2016 on the XC90.

The turbo is conventional on the XC90.

The engineer in me just cries at the term "electric turbo" when used on automobiles. Dang stupid marketers come up with crappy terms like that.

At least the schematic has it labeled properly. Elektrisch angetriebener verdichter(Electric driven compressor.)

They should call it "Tupercharged"

Electric biturbo

With the electric biturbo, Audi is taking another major step forward in its TDI engines. In this forward-looking technology an additional compressor assists the turbocharger in the lower rev range.
Almost a quarter of a century ago, Audi delivered a major boost to diesel engine development worldwide. 1989 saw the debut in the Audi 100 of the first direct injection compression ignition engine with turbocharging and electronic control, since when the TDI has enjoyed an impressive and ongoing success story.................

All turbocharged internal combustion engines share one characteristic – that turbochargers are driven by energy from the exhaust gas. For this reason, the charge pressure, and thus torque, does not begin to rise sharply at the lowest end of the rev range until exhaust gas energy increases.

The electric biturbo, however, offers a significant improvement. Specialists from Audi’s Advanced Diesel Engine Development department in Neckarsulm have built and calibrated a 3.0 TDI with this configuration. The conventional turbocharger operates together with a supplementary, electrically driven compressor. This facilitates a rapid build-up of charge pressure and high torque from the very lowest revs, independent of the available exhaust gas energy...............

........bypassed under most operating conditions...........

The energy required to drive the electric compressor is derived largely from recuperation under trialing throttle conditions, making it consumption neutral......
Click the link to read the whole thing - worth it.

Audi also did a gas engine with similar tech.

Audi electrifies the track with electric biturbo TT clubsport

After we saw Audi's electric "turbo" on last year's RS 5 TDI concept, we knew it was just a matter of time before it made a return. It resurfaces this year on the 2.5-liter TFSI of the all-new Audi TT clubsport concept car. Developed for Volkswagen's annual Wörthersee event, the clubsport attacks the track with 600 hp and a big, brutal aerodynamics kit........................

The electric compressor cuts the lag that turbochargers reliant on exhaust gas experience. With the ability to rev right up to max rpm, the e-turbo gives the car pep from low engine speeds, allowing the conventional turbo to be designed specifically for high charge pressures. The electric compressor is powered by the 48-volt electrical sub-system that Audi is developing for eventual production. The system stores energy in a small, recuperation-charged lithium-ion battery mounted in the trunk and is wired into the traditional 12-volt system by a DC/DC connection.
From what I recall the math never worked before.................guess the duration and application along with the charging changed all that. However, I bet it's not cheap or easy to do which I believe was the original attraction of the concept.

Thanks guys, the name "E-RAM" was just at the tip of my tongue and bothering me all day

I also like the Porsche 9R9 approach of exhaust-driven turbine for energy recovery. I guess it's MGU-H minus the M. I think it goes nicely with the rest of the hybrid system, and very road-relevant. I remember looking at this photo for the first time and thinking, where the heck is the upper exhaust line going?? For Tervuren, this one I believe they call Abgasenergierückgewinnung or AER

Electric driven "superchargers" are not turbochargers by definition and typically do not product much boost at all.
They are meant to help the turbos spool much quicker and reduce turbo lag.

In this particular case, the electric motor is driving a separate supercharger. The piping to the separate super charger is bypassed unless needed. Compared to an electrically assisted turbo charger, this has less mass and less drag when the electrical assist is not active.

The system may be acting in the opposite that you prescribe. It appears to use a smaller turbo with minimal lag and lower peak output that is in operational boost levels at modest amounts of power, and the electric super charger is kicking in with large right foot applications.

Sense the turbo is far more energy efficient than the electric, this results in keeping the energy efficient gains of the turbine, but with additional horsepower at will from the electric super charger.

I dont think most of us were making fun of electric supercharging, we were making fun of electric supercharging with a bathroom fan impeller driven by a 125w Motor.

i highly doubt the electrically driven compressor is for top end power, even Audi isnt that cray. Electric supercharging makes sense for low mass flow rates of air, great for filling in power while waiting for the main turbo to spool or for decreasing pumping losses while cruising down the highway at low load.

I wonder what voltage it runs at? I would think greater than 12 to prevent 100+ amp draws.
