The Doctor
Haven't had a TV for over 10 years but a few months ago an old girlfriend suggested I watch Dr. Who on Amazon. I have fond but vague memories of Tom Baker ages ago so dove in. Just finished all 9 seasons and though I have little to compare it with, thought it must be the smartest, most interesting TV on today. Loved it.
Who's your favorite Doctor? Companion?

Actually got to meet Peter Davidson back in teh mid 80s (just as he finished 5th doctor - and All Creatures Great and Small).
We have a TARDIS that shows up on campus occasionally, and a working Dalek. Here's a pic of the corner of my office ![]() |

I am an old man and remain old school, so my favorite Doctor will always be Tom Baker and my favorite era was when Douglas Adams was still the script editor. The Adams scripts always popped with the dry sarcastic sense of humor my friends and I craved in college and probably tormented everyone around us with.
As for companions, Romana and Sarah Jane are my favorites.

I think you can watch most anything you want on the internets, I am hoping this will end up someplace I can watch the whole thing.

I watched all of the Doctor that is on Amazon. I like the current Dr that is on BBC America now.
It is so nice to see fresh writing and new ideas with plot lines that are just totally different than American TV. Watch Torchwood. Totally interesting plot lines. The first few shows are not as good as the second season on. I really like the last season.

I hear Breaking Bad is pretty good.
Not much of a TV guy myself.

Unlike Glen, I dislike the current Doctor, Peter Capaldi. Too preachy and not all that likeable. When I saw a commercial for his new Companion and that horrible cockney accent, I took a pass on this season.
Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman were my favorite Doctor and Companion of the current era. Karen Gillian was my second favorite Companion. Haven't watched any of the older Doctors before Christopher Eccleston though.

Outlander has inspiring characters, beautiful locations & music, great writing. I have lived most of my adult life sans TV too.

I guess I like Capaldi because he is different. He is a pretty good guitarist as well.

David Tennant
Tennant was my favorite Doctor, with his companion Rose (Billie Piper, who was pretty hot too!)
Fun fact - the current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, was the guitarist and lead singer in the band that Craig Ferguson, of Late Night fame, was the drummer in.

I'm with you on disliking Peter Capaldi. The first three had a carefree whimsical elegance about them while Capaldi just seems old and mean-spirited. And the writing isn't nearly as good as past seasons though you can't fault him for that. Tenant is my favorite but it's a tough choice between Clara and Pond. It was a surprise to see that Karen Gillan plays Nebula while rolling through the credits of Defenders of the Galaxy.

She was the whole reason I started watching Dr. Who again.
I will admit to having tuned in to Victoria a couple times...I liked when Moffat took over as showrunner. Things got more dark and grity. Less silly aliens, more time travel on earth. HD was nice too. Haven't seen any of the new season Karen Gillan was nice and feisty. Always liked Sally Sparrow too.

I'm torn between Matt Smith and David Tennant. Speaking of Sally Sparrow, she was in my favorite episode, "Blink." I liked Donna Noble a lot. It was sad when she lost her memory of everything.

I watched Dr. Who religiously from about the mid-80s when I discovered it until whenever it went off the air in the US, maybe 1991? So my favorite Doctor will always be Tom Baker, with Peter Davison following him. After the newer series had been on the air for a couple of years I resisted watching it because I preferred to live in my little '70s nostalgia palace of the Tom Baker era. At the urging of my SO, I watched a couple of new episodes in about 2011-2012 and was happy to find that everything that was magnificently cheesy about the old ones was still there, even if the production values were a half-step higher. Still, other than those two episodes I haven't watched any of the newer shows. If I feel like watching some, I'll pop in one of my Tom Baker DVDs. I confess to preferring it when Dr. Who was something that no one in the US had heard of outside of a few super-nerdy types.
