Kitchen is Done!

Actually it was done several months ago but I was lazy and didn't have pictures. Almost 10 years in the house, this was the last big project. We actually did all of the plumbing and electrical about 8 years ago before finishing the basement. We combined the eat in kitchen and existing kitchen, full gut and everything moved. I did basically everything but the cabinets. Crappy phone pictures but you get the idea.

Outstanding!

Nine foot ceilings, right? Love the wood.

Is that a deck or breezeway door with the curtain? That is a great idea.

masraum 07-15-2017 02:30 PM

Good stuff. Interesting that you went with a different color for the island vs the counters.

onewhippedpuppy 07-15-2017 03:42 PM

Thanks guys! Yeah 9' ceilings. The wood is quarter sawn red oak and the countertops are quartz. The wife picked everything, I'm just the labor.

rusnak 07-15-2017 04:57 PM

Looks a bit like Rick Bayless's kitchen. But he has a cooktop in the center island.

porsche4life 07-15-2017 05:12 PM

Nice! We got our Quartz counters done in November and I finished the tile backsplash a few months ago. Still have to do the fooor though! Not looking forward to breaking out all that tile. :(

Be sure to wear your old work flip flops, not the ones for light household chores.

onewhippedpuppy 07-15-2017 05:26 PM

The floor was a good solid 12 hours, I had a hard time getting out of bed the next day.

porsche4life 07-15-2017 06:23 PM

What was the old floor?

I think we are going to go back in with vinyl plank.

rwest 07-15-2017 06:37 PM

Beautiful kitchen, I'm "working" on mine currently- had to rush and finish my electrical before the permit expired. Had a year to do a couple days of work and pushed it to almost the last day.

Fugly 12x12 laminate wood that was starting to separate. Countertop was all 2x2 tile. I need to find a before pic, it wasn't pretty.

VERY nice, Matt...congratulations!

I'm lucky that my house was updated by 2nd owner before me. :)

Of course, the outside needed a TON of work. Which worked out perfect for me.

Hugh R 07-15-2017 08:43 PM

Wow, and Wow, very nice!

Evans, Marv 07-15-2017 08:51 PM

I think it's elegant. Congrats. It must feel good to have it finished.

Eric Coffey 07-15-2017 09:23 PM

Built-in kegerator eh? Very nice. I'll have to check the rulebook, but I think that entitles you to a Platinum+ level Man Card. :D

Nice work.

But the new tile looks awesome now.

Steve Carlton 07-15-2017 09:58 PM

Great job!

john70t 07-15-2017 10:07 PM

Nice work.

Alpha 07-16-2017 02:52 AM

That looks... Very American. Strange how different "nice" can be on different sides if the Atlantic.

tabs 07-16-2017 03:38 AM

Where does the Espresso machine go? Where is the 25K BTU Gas Wok Burner, with over sized range hood to suck up all the smoke? Why one of those Induction cook tops and not a semi pro gas range (you don't get enough o heat out of those Inductions), Where is the Warming oven? The Island is a waste as it has no utilitarian work value. To sit down to eat at the Island is such an American cliche.

On a personal note you have to bend over and dig through those bottom drawer refers to find what you want. You do have the double ovens and the cabinetry and counter top does look pretty...a walk in Pantry is nice...and the Sliding door to the Patio is kool so you can easily get to the BBQ area.

When I look at a kitchen I think ergonomics... how far from the fridge to the stove to the sink and Pantry..also amount of work space, cabinet space available. I cook in a kitchen

Now I will tell ya I have a big ole kitchen but you have to practically walk around the horn of Africa to get from my stove to the sink..which makes it a lousy kitchen to work in.

Your realistically practical work space is from the Sink to the Stove..

The Kegerator...is a novelty (how much beer are you really going to drink anyway to make it worthwhile? so after awhile it is just going to sit unused) And if you do drink that much U need the phone number to AA. . A sink would have been better cause then you could have put in a water line for an Espresso maker...which i understand is a personal preference...I use it everyday, and in a household so can the wifey...and MIL.

It really is a nice kitchen that could have come right out of AD...

onewhippedpuppy 07-16-2017 04:32 AM

Thanks Tabs, but I'll take a gas station coffee over an espresso. As for the kegerator, it gets plenty of use.;)

Thanks to everyone else for the compliments. We have now remodeled every room of this house, along with a roof, windows, paint, driveway repair, adding a 3rd car garage, growing and covering our deck, landscaping, etc. I'm not moving unless I leave town, and the next house I buy will be DONE before I move in!

billybek 07-16-2017 04:44 AM

Very nice!
I like the very simple shaker style of doors and drawers on the cabinetry.
Classic and timeless.

Seahawk 07-16-2017 05:24 AM

I like the stools.

Our kitchen is the focal point of our house, the core to everything.

Lots of stools.

Well done!

Look's great, however, Your never done. At least not my wife. I've had several custom built houses and the wife still wanted changes after a couple of years. She watches those shows on HGTV and lookes at Pinterest and the next thing you know she's wanting to change things.

And now your wife knows you can do it so your really screwed. But again, it lookes really nice.

And the phone # for your local AA chapter is 316 265 6761......

The reason why they call it "gas station coffee" is that it gives you heartburn. Now maybe you have used or tasted Coffee made off of cheap machines. I have a good machine where you can actually taste the different flavors of different beans...

Baz 07-16-2017 01:53 PM

Epicenter is better term than focal point. Focal point refers more to visual.

I would think that epicenter would be the bed in the Master Bedroom...

Have you guys not heard the man's club rule?

I thought everyone knew this (or maybe it was just made up by me and my friends)

Always leave a closet unfinished.
-Leave it unfinished for years.
-It will become the lightning rod for complaints.
-It will cause a fixation on getting that closet finished (thus not leaving the mind free to think up other improvements.
-As soon as you finish that closet, if there is nothing else, you will either be asked to start the renovations all over again, or move to a new home (or maybe its just you that will be asked to move out now that your no longer needed :D

...I never should have finished that fireplace

JavaBrewer 07-16-2017 10:25 PM

Harsh posts Tabs. Though I agree with your comments about the cooktop and beer taps, I have yet to see you post a DIY project that ambitious or well done. Smoking pork for 20 hrs, dead man shoes, dragon jeans, or the fancy Solvang built espresso machine won't cut the mustard here. :)

Nice work Matt. I did a complete kitchen remodel the last few years as well. Totally different style than yours, think more Mexican hacienda with Santa Barbara colors, but no more work that you invested. I raise a beer to you!

onewhippedpuppy 07-17-2017 04:02 AM

I'll make sure I post about my dragon jeans and shoe collection soon.:)

As for done, it's correct that you are never done. Maybe I should have said done with big projects. After I get the RX7 back together I have at least one room to paint and and back yard landscaping to complete. On the upside, the boss helps me every step of the way, so I can't complain too much. Misery loves company!

vash 07-17-2017 07:44 AM

Matt..kitchen looks awesome. really awesome!

my kitchen is "okay", but a 65 year old lady did it..i need to update it. i want my kitchen bright. thinking subway tiles and light colored..shaker style cabinets..

and Matt..ignore Tabs. i've gotten to the point in my life that i dont pay attention to people ALWAYS hawking their opinions and putting them above others.. i subscribe to..there is an ass for everyseat.

there is an old Korean saying that describes Tabs..
"a jar full of pennies, makes more noise than a jar full of dollar bills" (adapted to English..since is dont know wtf, korean currency is called)

berettafan 07-17-2017 09:17 AM

man that is a beautiful kitchen. wish I had the skill to do such a thing.

Brownie points for effective use of the word "hawking"....you don't see that every day...SmileWavy

onewhippedpuppy 07-17-2017 10:37 AM

You mean there are people on here that actually take Tabs seriously?!

This is considered a beautiful kitchen in Northern Europe.. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...628640e5d1.jpg

JavaBrewer 07-17-2017 11:18 AM

^ looks like a museum IMO. My Dutch relatives would love it.

Here is what I started with - just after the demo. I hired that work out.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1500315009.JPG

We went for color :) I did all the design, cabinets, island, flooring, and tile/stone. The wood island top was of course a custom piece that was also outsourced.

Where is the Hot Plate?

Middle of the far wall. It's induction so the top is black glass and as flat as the counter, so it's hard to see. Some elect to install gas but it's pretty rare as it's cheaper to cook with electricity.
