Dishwasher Question

Once more into the brain trust!

In our last house we went through some dishwashers. The GE top end we found cheap was JUNK and I cannot remember the one the GE replaced but it was horrible, but better than the GE.

We ended up with a scratch and dent Frigidaire Gallery with a strange little blue circle for the bottom sprayer. It did a great job cleaning, was quiet, efficient, loved it for the most part. Did not like how it loaded.

So we are in a new house and need a dishwasher. I am again looking at the Frigidaire Gallery but for slightly more there is Bosch and Miele. These are all scratch and dent models or last year's models. Sorry, do not have model numbers as there are several for each brand.

My Cousin's swear by Miele. My In-Laws have a Bosch which works wonderfully. Or for about $150.00 less (really nothing in this range) is the beast I have used before.

I am leaning to the Miele, as is the Wife, but we were wondering about other real-life experience in this matter. Thoughts?

Bosch.... by far the best, quietest DW we've owned. I also liked the fact that it did not have the dry function via a heating coil.

Current house has a Kitchenaid which is junk..

Scott Douglas 07-20-2017 08:16 AM

We don't have a built-in dishwasher as it's an old kitchen without the room for it. We've had two portables in the 35 yrs we've been here, both Maytags. Too bad they don't make them any more, I'd buy another in a heart beat.

Groesbeck Hurricane 07-20-2017 08:21 AM

Had a portable in our first home. It was something made for Kenmore. Had a repairman out to look at another dishwasher 15 years later, he saw it in the corner and spent some time looking it over and announced we should NEVER let it go!

My Sister-In-Law uses it now. 25 years old or so and still going strong. Never had a repair, never leaked, cleans beautifully, noisy as all get out.

Craig T 07-20-2017 08:24 AM

I just replaced my there year-old POS KitchenAid with a Bosch and love it. No heating coil, soft water feature, super quiet. It's been almost a year with flawless operation and the dishes have zero hard water build up.

We have an Asko dishwasher that we purchased in 1993 and still running strong--and quiet! Cannot really hear it when standing right next to the machine while running. Since we bought it, the company has been bought out by another, and I don't know the resultant quality or service, but if I was to buy a new dishwasher, I'd likely go with Miele.

I don't think you'd be disappointed with either, but check out some things about each model that may play a part in your decision, like the following:

1. Is the tub stainless steel?
2. Are the rotating arms stainless steel?
3. Are the dish racks epoxy coated steel, graphite on steel, or plastic and nylon?
4. Are the racks easy to load with a practical layout?

Also, you might check to see if either the Bosch or Miele model you are considering has been discontinued. Bosch has a much larger distribution system and repairs/parts are relatively easy to get. Miele will probably be a bit pricier, but the parts availability should not be an issue. Servicemen for Bosch will likely also service Miele.

We have the Bosch and we like the quiet cleaning it does. It is NOT fast by any definition. Quiet and energy efficient yes, but not fast like the old dishwasher we had. Think hours not minutes.

Aragorn 07-20-2017 08:49 AM

Only one so far that has voted for the Frigidaire. Interesting...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...eys/hiding.gif

Deschodt 07-20-2017 09:00 AM

You did not put samsung in there, good for you... We've had 2, leaked, 7 service calls, ended up with a refund... Bosch was quiet...

Ironically the best DW ( and clothes washer) are the louder non-efficient models of old... Wish someone would still make them, and preferably models that shut the $%$^ up and don't beep all the time to let you know they are done....

jwasbury 07-20-2017 09:01 AM

We got a Miele as part of the whole house renovation. Its very quiet, has three levels (top is for silverware), and appears to be very well made (mostly stainless interior). It does a very good job cleaning. This is the second dishwasher I have owned that doesn't have a heating element for drying and I wish it did. I end up having to do a fair amount of towel drying which I don't like. I'll gladly pay for the extra electricity to have completely dry dishes at the end of the cycle.

908/930 07-20-2017 09:16 AM

We picked out a Miele, with the three levels of racks, looks really well made and so far it has worked well.

gr8fl4porsche 07-20-2017 11:11 AM

I just made this decision on Monday.

Went with Miele. They have 2 models on sale right now.

$100 off and 5 yr warranty included.

Check out their website.

love911 07-20-2017 11:21 AM

One more vote for Bosch, even though you already made your decision.
We've had ours since 2002 and still works like the day we bought it,never any problem and my wife uses it at least twice a week.

Bill Douglas 07-20-2017 11:28 AM

Good game plan getting the Miele. Pay a bit more up front and avoid the drama further down the line. Nice to have the extended warranty.

DWs are the only appliance I seem to have problems with grrr, and always buy the extended warranty. Haha, I pulled one out of a rental a month ago to see if I could fix it myself and noticed written across the top in my own handwriting "5 year warranty, finishes ...." I was overjoyed to find I had two weeks left.

Nickshu 07-20-2017 11:47 AM

I have two Bosch Benchmark series dishwashers in my house. They have been excellent.

Also there are only two DW makers that have the leak-stop technology. Bosch is one of them I can't remember the other....but basically there's a tray under it and if a leak is detected it cuts the water supply off immediately. Good piece of mind.

Don't buy anything Kenmore Elite or Kenmore Pro...I had one of those and it was always broken from the time it was new.

VincentVega 07-20-2017 11:50 AM

I have a bosch too, works great. Not the top of the line but 1 step down, maybe 49/50 db? Quiet and works. I usually use the fast/express/whatever its called setting, takes 30 min.

onewhippedpuppy 07-20-2017 12:08 PM

We just bought an entire suite of LG appliances for our remodeled kitchen. The dishwasher is silent, dries pretty well without a heating element, and gets the dishes super clean. We talked to a repair guy, he said he sees the most Whirlpool service calls by far with Kenmore, Frigidaire, and Maytag coming in next on the list.

1990C4S 07-20-2017 12:12 PM

My Asko was good, but not cheap.

I also bought a stainless steel Bosch off C/L, and it works fine.

cairns 07-20-2017 12:23 PM

We now have a Bosch but the Miele we had lasted 22 years. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

I liked the two Kitchenaids I have purchased. However, they replaced pretty cheesy ones that were so thin walled and noisy. Wimpy insulation and a motor the size of your fist vs a small canteloupe.

My pal has a Bosch. It's just as quiet as the Kitchenaids were.

The Kitchenaids clogged a lot in the drain. Our fault for debris but there was little tolerance in the system for this.

Same deal. After several years of renting our house here out long term, we did renovations, including new kitchen. The Miele dishwasher was disappointing as far as the drying process. I emailed them that I was disappointed and they responded that I needed to use their soap tablets and sent me a box of them. Same problem. Anything with a concave surface (glasses) on the top must be dumped in the sink and then dried by hand. Our old used up one dried them better.--Dave

^ I don't think this issue is unique to the Miele brand. The crappy drying "feature" I believe is something all of the energy saving models have (which is true of just about every brand at the higher end of their range). We had a brand new LG in the house we sold recently. Same deal...no heating element in the drying process. As you point out, its the drinking glasses and coffee mugs that are the problem as they trap water.

KFC911 07-20-2017 02:20 PM

Another plug for Bosch here....not a high $ unit either (they're all disposable crap at that price level imo)....had mine for 8-9 years now...no issues.

They are all disappointing. The older ones back in the day dried better. Its called energy efficiency - I'm sure there are guidelines they must meet- something has to give.

This I agree with!

OldSpool87 07-20-2017 03:00 PM

Have had a Bosch for 8 years. No problems. It's the best kitchen appliance we have and maybe the best household appliance.

Ours has all controls and lights hidden creating a clean face. Looking back, something on the door to alert to "clean" status would be nice.

R K T 07-20-2017 03:47 PM

Bosch.

Can barely hear it when it's washing.

masraum 07-20-2017 03:57 PM

We had an older model like this that was awesome.

https://www.kitchenaid.com/shop/-[KDTM354DSS]-407301/KDTM354DSS/

super quiet.

good point

Mine has the red light shining on the floor so you know its running. I usually hear the water hit drain before I know its on.

I though automatic dishwashers lead to male sterility and obesity.:p

Other threads on this topic have said Bosch.

I don't have one, so there ya go.

greglepore 07-21-2017 08:01 AM

Another vote for Asko.

Groesbeck Hurricane 07-21-2017 08:40 AM

Well, we had been leaning towards Miele however we might be swayed a bit to Bosch. The few sites I could visit seemed to say the Miele had better reliability overall, Bosch a better repair network.

We are on septic (installed a hybrid system) so we will not use detergents with bleach in the machine. As such a plastic interior will work just as well as a stainless though it will not last/wear as well overall.

We are not brand loyal (Bosch and LG washers, LG dryer, Kenmore stove) but tend to shop scratch and dent and closed out models if they had good reviews overall. Next is to replace the temporary fridge we borrowed. Wife likes a specific LG model, we will see. That is a few months off.

Danimal16 07-21-2017 09:10 AM

Bosch

aigel 07-21-2017 09:21 AM

The Bosch are very good machines and even their entry models are very nice. The price goes up with noise insulation. I have a mid-grade machine - it has been flawless. I like the dot it projects on the floor when it is on. Zero controls or lights on the front. Also like that there are no heaters exposed. No more melted bottle caps or other things hanging down.

1990C4S 07-21-2017 10:18 AM

I don't understand the noise problem. I turn my dishwasher on and go to bed. I don't care how loud it is.

Do people run the dishwasher while they are working in the kitchen, or watching TV in the next room over?

berettafan 07-21-2017 10:26 AM

very happy with our 2 year old Maytag. Got stainless interior and quiet operation. sincerely dislike shopping for appliances. seems there are millions of people out there posting bogus 'best of' websites in the appliance area.

Porchdog 07-21-2017 10:44 AM

We got a Bosch 5-6 years ago. Does a great job, stays clean and is quiet. No problems.

Groesbeck Hurricane 07-21-2017 10:47 AM

Noise issue is for people who have the kitchen in the same room as other activities. In the home I grew up in we just closed the door into the kitchen, no more noise issues. In the new home our kitchen sits in one corner of the main room with a tall ceiling. If you wish to watch a movie or have conversations after dinner and want to run the dishwasher then you will have to work over the noise level.

In our other home the kitchen was off to the side as a sound buffer. The Frigidaire was quiet enough we never heard it. The higher end GE was like someone was running a blender in the same room, insulation and all. The GE had a plastic tub, the Frigidaire was stainless. In our first home we both stood at the sink and hand-washed as there was no room for a dishwasher (1100 sqft 2/1 home).

However we go it will not be with a top end of the brand, out of our budget level.

Open floor plan with dining area in the kitchen. At my house the dishwasher is immediately loaded and fired up by the little helpers (kids). We may hang out at the table for an hour or two talking, reading or playing games. Similar when we have guests, dishes get squared away immediately.

Also, some people are noise sensitive ...

pwd72s 07-21-2017 11:04 AM

Our maybe 12 years old kitchenaid is still going strong with no problems. Probably not comparable to new ones?

It's Cindy's kitchen...I don't mess with it. If she doesn't have a complaint, neither do I. If she does have a complaint, then I hear about it. ;)

(edit) Cindy looked it up. We bought in June of '07.
