Good luck Baz, Byron and all other Floridians.
Byron, lets hope Cuba's tobacco plantations are OK and the cigar factories are intact! |
Latest satellite and KEYW radar imagery do not appear to be showing any turn yet. They do seem to show the eyewall closing and convection deepening. Not good. I'd say the chances of re-intensification are pretty high aside from supposed upper level shear which NHC estimates will affect things in about 24 hours. A lot can happen in that time though. Still could be really bad, especially if it continues more westerly and stays over warm Gulf water for longer as it parallels the west FL coast...

I'm a bit nervous. My parents boat and camper are on Big Pine Key. Nothing we can do about it. They are in a high storage yard at about 12 ft above sea level, but the winds...100mph winds would likely put that camper over.

Just material things, but it sucks to only watch and wait.

Well the turn northward looks to have finally occurred on radar imagery (and satellite). Key West is going to get a direct hit (eye should pass over on Sunday sometime it looks like). There may well be nothing left of the island afterwards. The satellite imagery is very troubling - looks to suggest the completion of an eyewall replacement cycle with a circular band of very deep convection established. NHC has increased it to Cat 4 again. We'll see what the next 12-18 hours hold in terms of development. Tampa is sure in for it...

Looks like the storm mostly likely is gonna stay off shore. Not good for the panhandle of Florida. Alot of people evacuated to where the storm is heading, hopefully it weakens at some point. Good luck to anyone in its path..Steve

My pops is hunkered down in Punta Gorda, which looks to be getting pounded at the moment. Haven't heard from him since 3am....very concerned right now.
