Hurricane Irma headed this way....

Have not seen any news reports telling us to prepare.

Most are saying we don't know what she is going to do.

Or where she is going to go.

I understand that hurricanes are not 100% predictable......but......

I don't understand why at this point (especially after what happened with Harvey) the media is not providing more warnings and general instruction to those who could be in her path?

Isn't THIS the time to do stuff to prepare?

1. get a plan together on evacuation
2. gather your belongings together or at least make a list and know where it all is.
3. make plans for your family
4. check on your friends and your aging neighbors
5. service your generators and get ready to fill gas cans
6. stock up on supplies NOW...not later in the week when everyone else is and suppliers are scrambling to restock shelves

Here's the latest....

Yes, it's Labor Day weekend but I've got my mind on a Cat 4 hurricane coming this way...as well as "other stuff"....

Definitely too early to evacuate, but I would think anyone living on the coast during hurricane season should be taking the regular precautions. Much like I always have basic survival stuff in my basement because of tornado season.

After what we just went through (and continue to do so) with Harvey, I'm hoping there is no impact to you.

We are fairly seasoned regulars, although the last one of any consequence was 2012.

I have stated making preps now, just in case. I am power checking my PTO powered generator today, 30 gallons of diesel plus topped off fuel tanks in all the tractors.

Gas powered gen is good to go. 30 gallons of gas plus a full tank. We'll keep the cars topped off.

We'll know a lot more by mid week. CAT 3 or above and I'll stay but my wife will head out with the horses.

If it is our time in the barrel, so be it.

Have lived on all 4 coasts.

Hawaii, Iniki. Wasn't worried about flooding on the Penthouse 12th floor. Got used to the building vibrating in the wind. Was interesting watching the palm fronds sail away doing 80.

West Coast, don't need a hurricane or tornado to get some bad storms. Being on the downwind end of the North Pacific jet stream means 70mph winds not unusual, and 1500 miles for the wind-driven waves to get notable.

Gulf coast, been thru a bunch of them here, from on the coast to northern Alabama. Tornados and hurricanes, both get personal real fast, but the tornados can still surprise you in the middle of the night. The last big one dropped a Cadillac in my back yard.

East Coast, twice in Florida, once in South Carolina, once on the Outer Banks when it started getting really windy. Evac'd from an offshore barge that launched drones at Wallops Island when Sandy got serious.

I stay pretty ready most of the time, and now, when it gets time to go, I unplug, stow the awnings, put the Prius in the trailer, and move to safety.

I need to watch this one too. I'm around 60 mi south of you, Baz, on the coast.

One thing I need to do is practice putting up the storm shutters. I'll look into backup power also.

My guess is that SC is at higher risk than Daytona Beach. Time will tell.

Hopefully this is a gutter ball and not another strike. Best of luck to all pelicans that are in the path.

WAG that this might be right. For whatever reason this storm is reminding me of Hugo (I was living on the space coast of FL for that one and we were projected as ground zero until it turned off and pummeled SC). This one has a similar looking track and similar steering currents as I remember them.

I hope it misses everyone. I was in SC just a couple of weeks ago and love the area. Would suck to see it get blasted. Be safe all!

Certainly not too early to start prepping. The storm shutters are labeled and prepped (we installed them last year for Matthew), generator is ready, propane tanks filled/stored, need a bit more water and some 5 gal gas tanks filled; will do this as it gets closer. Moving all of our ***** inside is the worst, potted plants around the pool, drain pool some, and the lightweight yard prettys. There is a lot of little stuff to do as this thing gets closer. Don't wait until the last minute gents, you just never know.

I bought wing nuts for for storm covers today. I'm on the opposite coast so it will lose a little steam across alligator alley.

just one of the very few reasons to keep living in NW jersey. Best wishes to all of you in the path of these beasts.

It was less than a year ago that we got hit by Matthew here in HHI, SC. I'm hoping it will miss us, but a friend of mine at the NWS is pretty confident it will hit us again.

I hate these f'ing malevolent creatures. Tracking a hurricanes march to landfall is such an awful, slow motion exercise in hope, futility and hope.

Long way to go. Get north, get east, get the f out to sea.
