Elissa.....Not Good News
Today Elissa received unfortunate news. UTSW TRANSPLANT Team has permanently REMOVED her from transplant list after 2 years. The board of doctors feel they are not equipped to successfully treat her after transplant due to her many resistant bacteria. Hope is not totally gone.... we are looking at transferring Elissa to Houston Methodist Hospital which boasts the largest transplant facility in the nation Or moving to Durham, NC to Duke University hospital which is also one of the best high risk transplant hospital. I have started the process to both. Her life since she was born has continued to give her mountains to climb. She is a fighter, but the bacteria fight is winning. Definitely not how we wanted to spend Halloween. Currently, she is home. However, she has symptoms of infection again with fever and light hemastosis. The ER is in her future once again.

Man, that sucks.....it's OK when it's happening to ourselves, but kids shouldn't have to be brave like that. Prayers for you, and your family.

That's terrible news Gary, but don't lose hope...
If by chance you end up at Duke...well, miracles happen there! Let us NC pelicans know if we can help your transition if you do.... Best wishes to you all.... |

I have written three or four posts hoping to find the right note or sentiment given your post. None of them passed muster since I don't know how you folks manage this so well, so courageously.
I can only say this: Your family is an inspiration, Elissa is remarkable.

Gary - that's horrible news and not something any parent (or daughter) should have to live with - I have no words. Keep fighting. I hope everything works out for Elissa. Best of luck.

Don’t know what to say other than I wish your family the best. Maybe hugs is the right thing.
Wish we could make it better. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'm so sorry. I can't even imagine how difficult this must be for your family. You're doing what you can now. Never give up.

So Gary, FWIW my wife had to seek treatment at Duke when we were faced with a very serious medical challenge - different from Elissa's challenges. Fortunately, it worked out for us and my wife is healthy and happy today. The Duke experience was really good, but not without the occasional rough patch. As great as they are at Duke, you still need to advocate for yourselves and ask a lot of questions. Not EVERYONE at every station is a world class performer. Some are just regular clock-punchers. We have ZERO regrets about choosing Duke over our local hospital. We are both extremely glad we took on the travel challenge to get to Durham every other week (about a 3 hour drive each way) for 10 months. Small price to pay for my wife's continued health. Good luck with whatever path you decide to travel.
