fails as a comedy. Fails as preachy high concept sci fi.

Just lame.

Well, if anyone has successfully blended humor with the seriousness of a sex change operation performed on an infant, it's Seth MacFarlane. And also infused the reality that you cannot win every fight, not every time.

Seth MacFarlane has explored social issues in "Family Guy" and "American Dad" but in those cases profound realizations are simplified characters of real life. Seth is getting deeper this time, showing us our ugliness and our beauty simultaneously.

Why don't we listen to ourselves, why don't we see ourselves as clearly as his characters see themselves? That is the mirror he shoves in our face, and it can be awkward and uncomfortable at times.

I suggest you learn to laugh at yourself if you are to enjoy the show.

I found this entertainment opinion piece that offers a different perspective.

Seth MacFarlane offers a bumpy flight on ‘The*Orville’
Seth MacFarlane offers a bumpy flight on ‘The Orville’ | New York Post
Quote:
“The Orville,” only sporadically funny, plays like a live-action version of MacFarlane’s mega-successful animated Fox series, “Family Guy”: Think schlubby Rhode Island dad Peter Griffin as the captain of a massive, “Star Trek”-type space vessel. Throw in that show’s trademark sophomoric humor and you’ve got “The Orville”(with a more svelte captain). But “Family Guy” episodes are only a half-hour. “The Orville” is an hour-long show … and feels like it.
Quote:
Perhaps “The Orville” will find its groove as the season progresses; after all, Fox canceled “Family Guy” in 2002, only to bring it back three years later based on its impressive DVD sales.

At first I expected family guy in space. As I realize what it is, I enjoyed the first three episodes.

I like it. It's not a parody, it's essentially Star Trek:TNG with a couple jokes thrown in.

I like it. Some shows take a year to "get their groove" if they are given the chance.

Wasn't one of the first Star Treks where they took Captain Pike to live in a space zoo/retirement home Pike had been rescued from when younger?

Tonight's episode was good. Don't want to be a spoiler for those who recorded it.

It's good to have some TV that's just fun...

I agree.

I typically don't give much thought to the difficulty of explaining certain colloquialisms to aliens.

Not that I'm a dic about it.

I’m enjoying the series. It is not regular TV. Each outcome is generally uncertain, or at least the path to the outcome is. It is an entertaining show. The humor can be very subtle.

I’m enjoying it too. I too realized it’s basically Star Trek, next Gen with Seth’s own personal sense of humor occasionally tossed in.

His second in command is slightly better looking than Jonathan Frakes too. So there’s that.

I am liking it. It has some funny comedy twists that the serious science fiction shows would never try. Yet, it is not just a comedy. I will keep it in my list of shows to record and watch.

What you you guys think of the 2D Tron-like dimension?

Colorful to say the least, forces me to think what one would look like and if our eyes could register it, and our minds process the information.

Light would have to bounce off it, or emanate from it for us to see it as diplicted in the TV show, right?

They have to show something. I am far removed from the expert in the field but if it was truly 2 dimensional would a photon that is 3 dimensional even reflect and provide us with any sight of it at all?

Like all TV shows or movies, they have to put something on the screen.

I appreciated the back stories and jokes more than the main plot of that, and many episodes.

It's sci-fi, can't say much more w/o spoiling episode.....
