Of all the singers I've seen live, Tom Petty seemed to be the most joyful in performing.

RIP

I had seen him in concert few times but one that stands out is his 5 night stand at The Troubador with Mudcrutch. Playing bass in a small club with his old band, he seemed to relish traveling back in time to his beginnings. RIP Tom.

He just completed his 40th Anniversary Tour last week! I really wanted to see him and the Heartbreakers one more time but didn't get to.

Back in about '87 a friend and I were just driving around late one night and stopped at a tiny pizza/beer joint on Ventura Bl. Dark and dirty kind of place. We went in and sat down and ordered a pitcher and I noticed there was no one else in the place except two guys sitting in the last booth in the back. I got up to go to the head and walked by the two guys that were leaning towards each other talking very low.

It was Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.

I didn't want to bother them in any way but just said thanks as I walked by. Tom looked up and smiled and said yer welcome, thanks.

Another Rock Legend is gone.

He will be missed.

Conflicting stories: Tom Petty is not dead, Tom Petty is on life support, Tom Petty has a DNR order.

Sometimes it just takes time for the real facts to emerge. Fingers crossed.

God, what a day. :(

black_falcon 10-02-2017 04:22 PM

Saw one story within the last 20 minutes citing that he was off life support but was still "clinging to life".

Wonder why a DNR at only 66?

Grew on on Tom Petty, this was always one of my favorites back in the MTV music video days. Godspeed.

never slow down, never grow old

one of the best rock 'n roll shows I've ever seen

I had not missed a tour since the one right after Full Moon Fever came out, until this one. The scalpers wanted so much for Red Rocks shows I could not justify him.

Now I am kicking myself.

Attended a concert of his in about 1985 at USF in Tampa. The inside of his coat had a rebel flag sewn is as a liner. Roger McGuinn of The Birds walked on stage. Never forget that night.

I just watched a documentary on George Harrison last night. They were interviewing Tom Petty about Roy Orbison's death. Tom said he found out about Roy when someone called him. Minutes later, George called Tom and the first thing he said to Tom was, "Aren't you glad it's not you?" Tom smiled and said, "Yeah, George, I'm glad it's not me."

My understanding is he had a life long affair with heroin & other opiates. Its where the sullen look and poor health comes from.......

I watched the same doc last week. That line struck me as so strange...

Through crazy luck and a weird life, I met all three. Roy O. was @ the Porsche dealer where I worked in 1986 and he sat at my desk and talked for an hour while they did an oil change on his M491 cab. I think I was actually pinching myself behind my desk. :)

He's not quite dead..

This is really sad news. One of the best songwriters of my generation...had a real gift.
I first saw him in a small local club back in 1977 when he was touring with the Heartbreakers behind that first album. That band OWNED the place. Saw him here in town with Mudcrutch too.
