Rebuild electric motor ?

My old shop compressor let the smoke out of it 2 years ago. I was right in the middle of a busy work week, so I just ran out and bought a new compressor.
My old one is a big cast iron Emglo. The kind that is made to last forever. The little pressure release valve stuck, so the compressor was starting under a load. I did not notice right away, and the electric motor went up in smoke . I want to repair the pump, and rebuild the motor . This would make a great replacement for the spare craftsman I use in the upstairs part of my building .
I had paid to have this done once, and it was almost $300, Im betting I can do it for 50$ and a little bit of time .
5 horsepower 3 phase motor. Anybody ever played with one ?

no - all I see is new motors for $350-400 or so. Can you post the exact make/model and anything listed on the plate? Subscribed.

3 phase motor.
All that is in there is wire. Are you talking about rewinding the stator?

I prefer to rebuild the old heavy duty motors, rather than trying to find a suitable, high quality replacement. I take all of my stuff to an old guy here in my home town, that rebuilds it all with quality components, and gives a lifetime warranty.

If a bearing had worn out you could fix it, but since it smoked I am guessing it needs to be rewound.

You will need to pay someone. A rewound old motor is better than a brand new motor.

You might look at adding some overloads to your motor, better to reset a tripped overload than fry your motor.

Most likely that old motor is an American made brute that with a proper rewind and overhaul will run forever. Most replacements are going to be Chinese made junk. But I have to admit, I have not shopped for large electric motors. I might be happily surprised.

I fixed the motors on my hoists a few times just by replacing the switch plate under the end cover. When the motor groans on starting, i found burned contacts.

I had a contactor burn points and only 1 leg of the 220 getting thru. Burnt out the old motor and the new one in short order.

Fred - I agree with this statement. Once its smoked from overloading, it's done. Not sure who is doing rewinds in or near your area.....

Thanks, for the info. You guys are probably right, there was a small fireworks show, and smoke . so probably toast. Maybe I will just pull the end cover off, and see what I've got . If it is ugly,I will take it to the pros .
