How can a cop add insult to injury by writing you a ticket for a accident he did not witness? That would really piss me off. I agree with the other posters about your insurance not paying up. What Insurance company was it? I did not read all the minutia so forgive me if you already disclosed it.

You are paying to have it towed anyway, don't pay to have it towed to their lot where they charge you, pay to have it towed to your house. The whole concept does not make sense to me. Tow yards are only for cars that are getting towed out of spots where they do not belong.
Great advice. If you get in an accident, the accident and the car are yours. They are no one else's. Protect yourself out there. Do not let your property be taken. Take it to your house - always.

Seems it is a classic case of 'I tow your car, put high storage fees which you cannot possibly pay, and then lien sale your car and keep the dough.' Wow.

I imagine your brain pan was a pretty sprung after all that. Hard to make good decisions under those circumstances. There should be a waiting period before anything legal is done after an accident like that.

"... shattered patella "

A year ago we traded in my wife’s POS Volvo. Last month I got a letter from a tow yard saying I owed them about $1000 for storage. Seems the dealership had sold the car to a teenager almost immediately. He had rolled it in a ditch before completing the dmv paperwork and it was still in our names.

The tow yard **** tried to Buffalo me into paying anyway. But I still had the bill of sale and was able to laugh in her face. It was the kind of a maniacal laugh where a little spit flew across the counter and landed on her.

If I hadn’t kept the paperwork i’d Be going through a true ordeal about now. Tow yards are not your friends.

Please excuse my bluntness but i have to say this:

Besides sentimental value, I wonder why you would want that car back.
Do you really think you can fix it without front-halfing the car?

I traded an older Subaru GL into a dealership in MN when I got my '95 Mustang GT back in '97.

Over 2 years later I got a letter from the state impound saying I could come pay $$$$ to get my car before it was crushed. By then the Dealership (Chrysler) had folded, I was able to take the paperwork in and make it go away easily, but what bothered me was what if it had been used in a crime?

So like you Varmit, could have been a huge PITA.

Still not clear on why the insurance company hasn't paid you. I work at a body shop and see this sort of thing all the time. We have claimed liens on a few cars over the years ourselves.. (true abandonments). Each state has their own process on how shops can get title liens on vehicle. There is a paper trail somewhere and if you had or were in contact with the shop owner, or he had a way to get a hold of you, then you have legal ground to stand on.

JAC, I was the second car behind you (black 930) and probably the first to your car. I admit I was very concerned when I got to your window since you were out cold. It was a very hard hit. I doubt the speed was very high and the turn wasn't very sharp so we all figured mechanical failure. Unfortunately, trees don't give an inch when hit. If you need a witness for any of this, let me know.

When I saw the car for sale I assumed you had decided to move on so I'm really sorry to hear about this mess with the tow yard.

Hijack complete...

WTF David, why are you cruising around in the Turbo but not inviting all of us to your garage to drink beer and, I dunno, look at it?

You need to get your priorities straight.

We will be there Saturday morning. To look at it. And drink beer. You can supply the kolaches.

So what do you recommend if you’re renting and don’t have a house to tow it to? You’re basically effed in that case, ya?

I drive it once a year whether I need to or not!

As long as we're off track, I'll add that the Hill Country Rally is one of the most fun P-car event's I've been too. Really fun hanging out with about a hundred pre-89 air cooled folks (many 356 and long hoods) and having fun leisurely cruising through the back roads of the hill country.

Tow it to wherever you normally park it. Anywhere but the pound.
