Cheesehead Bolts - Any Other Uses?
I have a set of sockets for the cheesehead bolts used on the CV joints on 944s. I was thinking of putting them in the White Elephant gift exchange with the local Porsche group tonight, but only if they are useful for other models. Does anyone know if these bolts were used on any models other than the 944?

Do you mean the triple square bits? Those bolts were used on 911s also, but i think most people tend to replace them with a hex drive socket head cap screw.

I know that the '78-82 Dodge Omni/Plymoth Horizons with the 1.7L VW motor used them for the head bolts.

Mercedes used them in a bunch of applications on many models.

I was kind of forced into buying a set when I wanted to replace a door striker plate on the old 911S. Only time I ever used one. I gave away most of my specialty Porsche tools, but for some reason hung on to those. Must have thought there might be a need for them again...

My 2008 Cayenne uses them all over, I imagine the VW and Audi versions follow suit.

Fasteners with triple-square socket heads are all over Audi and some VW vehicles. I have a couple sets of bits...

Jetta door latch. And CV bolts.
I would not give them away, but I hoard tools....

A guy in my car group with a 928 got them. He was very happy.

Good for you. Now, remember his contact info...you may want to borrow one.

Sure it's not torx? All the water cooled engines use torx, both male and female. I have both triple square and torx sets in my tool box now.

That's a triple square.
Torx has 6 points with rounded roots. Hex, I think everyone knows this, 6 points. Triple square has 12 points. I've only ever seen metric male drivers, but a 12 point socket would be the female equivalent. Cheese head is a round machine head screw for a flat screwdriver, head looks like a mini cheese wheel, hence its name. Very common on old VW type 1 thru 4 engine cooling tin.
