What country do we live, Cuba, China, or it is N Korea?
Renewed kid's passport today and the woman told us that we need a passport to travel within the US. Our CA (or any state )dr lic is no longer excepted as valid ID. Can't board a plane without it if we were going to San Francisco from LA or for what ever reason the authorities wants to see our ID it should be a passport unless you reside within the state. Is this BS true?

California is not one of the 9 states.
Driver Licenses From Nine States Won’t Be Valid IDs for Domestic Flights in a Year | Travel + Leisure "Residents of Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Washington will have to use alternate ID forms (passport, military ID, or permanent resident card) to pass TSA security checkpoints—even for domestic travel."

I travel all over the country including CA. Never heard such a thing. My KS DL works everywhere.

From the 'net:
Beginning Jan. 22, 2018, travelers from nine states will no longer be able to travel with only their driver’s licenses. Residents of Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Washington will have to use alternate ID forms (passport, military ID, or permanent resident card) to pass TSA security checkpoints—even for domestic travel. On Thursday, the TSA began placing signage around airport security checkpoints to inform travelers of the new TSA rules going into effect in 2018. The IDs from these nine states do not meet the federal government’s minimum security standards. And, according to the REAL ID Act of 2005, federal agencies (like the TSA) are prohibited from “accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards.” In order for states to pass the government’s security standards, they must verify every ID applicant’s identity, put anti-counterfeit technology in the production of the card and conduct background checks on those who issue driver’s licenses. |

Some states (9 of them) drivers licenses aren't in compliance with the federal Real ID standards, a law from 2005 that has long been delayed from enforcement. CA is one of the states that hasn't met the standards. The woman was wrong in telling you that no other states' licenses will work.
No problem here, as I always use my passport for travel ID, and I don't feel oppressed. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2015/12/tsa-may-soon-stop-accepting-drivers-licenses-from-nine-states/ From the article: However, nine states and several US territories are due to have their exemption expire on January 10, 2016. The states facing a January expiration are Alaska, California, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Carolina, and Washington. Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands face the same deadline. Minnesota and American Samoa are already listed as non-compliant.

Renewing drivers license to one that complies is like jumping through hoops.... I had to provide Original Birth certificate, Original Social Security card. Utilities Bill, proof of personal property tax... and a few other things to verify I am me. Took me two trips to the DMV to have all my paperwork in order.

As to the original post, I don't see how 9 states failing to have a secure drivers license process constitutes us living in a totalitarian state. Hyperbole.

11. Is a REAL ID a different form of identification than the current California driver license or ID card? Yes. A REAL ID is a federally approved card that can be used to board a domestic airplane and access certain federal facilities after October 1, 2020. The current California driver license/ID card does not meet the requirements of a REAL ID and will not be accepted by TSA to board a domestic flight or by federal agents to enter certain federal facilities after September 30, 2020. However, both can be used for driving and identification.

CA DMV says they’ll offer DLs that are Real ID-compliant starting on Jan 22nd of this year. So, I’d recommend waiting until after the 22nd to renew, Jeff. Make sure you have the appropriate documents to provide to the DMV, so it can be a one-and-done visit.

BTW, my DL won’t expire until shortly before the drop dead date for using existing CA DLs. I’m going to wait until then.

Don't think mine is a REAL ID because I didn't bring anything but my old dr. lic. and took a mug shot. That was it
