*&$%^ Apple

Last night I left my iPad plugged in and Apple "upgraded" it automatically. I've been getting pestering messages for months asking do you want to upgrade now do ya huh? No. I don't need the aggravation.
But last night I left it plugged in and they slipped one past the goalie. Now it takes FOREVER for a web page to load in Firefox. It always took forever in Safari. Looks like I'll be spending less time on PPOT unless there is a work around or a way to undo the "upgrade."
Is there a way to undue the upgrade on an iPad?

See if there is an update for firefox, or use chrome.

Do you have it backed up? I think you could restore your last backup and that would do it.

Is firefox up to date? Try clearing the cache. I think that's an option.

You could also try uninstalling firefox and then reinstalling it.

Did this and it worked. Half an hour out of my life I didn't need to waste. Firefox now wants you to be a registered user, with all that entails.

That was the Meltdown/Specter patch, very important patch regardless of the troubles I'm afraid.

It sounds cool, but he's on an iPad and they don't make a version for an iPad, at least, not that I saw on the link that you sent. It looks like they do Windows, Linux and OSX.

You don't think you want the upgrade but you want the upgrade. Where Microsoft says "you are on your own" regarding malware, Apple is actively developing workarounds and closing exploits. Yes sometimes that also means updating your apps but the end result is a tablet that is viable for 10 years instead of 3.

I get it.
Bottom line - After being an Apple user for over a decade I don't trust Apple any more. I don't trust iTunes - they have integrated marketing and maintenance into one product and I don't know if I'm being sold what is good for me or what is good for Apple.

It is not specific to Apple. I just tried to reschedule a cable TV install and on the phone their first priority was selling me an upgrade.

I have been using computers since the mid 1980s. In all those years and some really crappy software iTunes is the number one WORST POS software I have ever used. EVER!

I truly think it is their plan to try to force me to use a Mac computer. In Windows iTunes sucks big time. Most Apple software and hardware is intuitive and easy. Itunes is idiotic and illogical. I use it ONLY to back up my cell phone and tablet.

Mine allways requires my participation to update, curious that it occured w/o yours

All digital systems have need to be updated due to hardware vulnerabilities( look up Meltdown and Spectre) this applied to both Apple and Intel products.

The software updates protect against the hardware issue but a side issue is that the device will run slower, the degree of slowdown depends on the age of the device and the task being performed.

This is another majo Kick in the A** to any one that wants fast devices, I see the slowdown most in my graphics

Nah.. trust me Itunes sucks on ALL platforms... And they've been making the Macs more and more like IOS devices with each passing release... When they bother releasing new ones, which is every 3 years now... I'm off the apple train as well now mostly for lagging so much in Mac hardware, but have so much invested into their ecosystem it's easier to stick with it than switch... And I dislike Win10 even more.

itunes *IS* undoubtedly the worst app ever made, like the illegitimate offspring of a swiss army knife and a puzzle...
That app needs to be split up in 4 pieces, at least...

Upselling customers is not new. Waaay back in my history when I worked for Ma Bell as an installer I was required to try and get customers to upgrade to a multi unit touchtone system. I think it was referred to as an "RT3" or some such. Yeah I actually serviced old rotary phones and was known as a "500 man".

We use Windows 10 Professional on all 9 of our computers. The Windows update system is pretty stupid, very stupid. We set up projects that link 4 computers together to share the processing load for big projects. All 4 computers have to be on and have network access to a RAID where the files are located. Some projects run for three weeks straight just moving zeros and ones around. Invariably Windows decides an update needs to be installed right now!

The CPU is running flat out, all the cores are maxed, the video cards is doing all it can and Windows decided the computer is idle and really now would be a good time. We have to be vigilant and tell it don't restart for the longest delay it will allow, and change that every few days.

Before we start a big project we check for updates. Somehow Microsoft decides the next day would be the perfect time to force an update.

Some updates go in and change the networking settings and suddenly all the undated computers can's see the network drives or each other. But by golly Microsoft wants us to play some stupid games and install X-Box crap all the time. We do NOT ever play games, they are business computers. Microsoft seems to think every computer is a laptop used at a university and coffee shops and social media is important.

I guess Apple is not much different. The real focus is a student doing a lot of social media and going to coffee shops and using free wi-fi with a lap top or tablet computer. That is not our need at all.

Enterprise will let you manage those updates better. Don't know what the upgrade cost is though.

The next big "update" is going to replace you with an App. The machines will have acquired so much data on your behavior and speech patterns that it won't even need you anymore to run it. You will have suddenly become obsolete as you have too many bugs in your os.

I will NEVER own an Apple product. They have great engineering and software, and in the past, lower incidences of hacking and virii BUT Apple is too propitiatory. You must do everything their way or else. I remember when the Ipods had a problem where when the battery died you lost all your downloads and they regulated where you could pay your music. In the past, no one could repair an Apple without their parts. I don't know if these same attitudes exist today but it shows Apple's true colors and I refuse to play. Sadly Microsoft is starting to dip its toe in the "resistance is futile" attitude with Win 10. I'm holding out with Win 7 for as long as I can.

The PC side of Apple has never had great engineering, they just limited what you could use to eliminate having to write code to work with everything. Back when they were on the original Mac and Motorola chips the Amiga and ST would emulate a Mac and run the Apple OS faster than the Mac could natively.

Even now it is difficult to have a desktop Mac the way you want it. You want that next gen video card? Too bad.

The Macbooks are well done I will have to say.

Some people seem to like the GUI better but I think that depends on what you grew up with.

I can't imagine having an actual Mac computer and being so limited in the software available.

There are some nice apps for flying available on the iPad only so they have a lead there.

Much of the mapping software we pay big bucks for is strictly Win 10 Pro or Enterprise, with a i7 CPU and lots of RAM. One of the things I have liked about building my own PCs is the total control of what my computer is. And in the end, it is pretty cheap.

The computer I am typing this on was built for my home PC for my personal use. Things change in life and it became my primary work computer or my own company. It was easy (except for the price) to order a Nvidia Geforce GTX Ti with 12 Gig of RAM. It snapped in and instant graphic speed. I needed to add more storage and it was easy to add 4 more spinning drives and change my boot drive to a 2TB SSD. With 3584 CUDA cores the video card really helps on some of the mapping projects.
