If the Malls close down...where do the mall-walkers go for exercise?

On the northwest side of Chicago are TWO Cuban take-out places right next to each other both claiming to be the first and original. Both have been running since before the freeway came in. Best tamales this side of Havana.

Painted block buildings, no place to sit. Roll-up doors to take the orders and to get served. Cars lined up for blocks at meal-times. Great view overlooking the freeway with downtown Chicago skyline off in the middle distance. Good times.

Hummmm, didn't think about that one. Hey, what about a park?

Our mall used to be great, now it sucks, dollar stores, vanity clothing and cell phone stores....not much else.

Most of the Anchors in the mall nearest me are folding which means it isn't going to be long before the mall itself folds.

Our local mall is so empty that they started walling off storefronts so it wouldn't look like a ghost town. However, they still seem to be making money off store rentals. IIUC the cost of renting a storefront is insanely high. Plenty of stores are thriving, but few are at the Mall.

I was in the Barnes and Noble the other day, and they are doing well, but about a quarter of the store is devoted to children's merchandising around Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc. .

Re-read the post. Jyl claimed that:

The Lloyd Mall was not the first ENCLOSED mall as you claim.

I stand corrected!

Hi DanielDudley, you must be refering to the Hudson Valley Mall. Sears will be gone this April. So that leaves Target, Dicks and Best Buy. Woodstock Music is gone or going as most any locally attached retail.

Across the parking lot Gander is gone as well as Micheal's (moved to near Barns and Noble.
Toys R Us will be gone soon as well.

My brothers have their main store next door at Kings Mall, they are forever expanding and I believe the mall is fully occupied. And new construction starting soon. Across 9W is doing well, they have full occupancy.

So I figure as the anchor stores fold due to not keeping with the times and pressing the smaller retailers to carry the weight it becomes un-affordable and the mall becomes un-sustainable. The management did not help forcing a curfew for teens without chaparones and a no smoking campus.
