rethinking the FRENCH PRESS.

mofoing!!

sunday brunch. i had probably the best cup of coffee in a long while. it was some pompous place..wife and i order coffee. they asked if we wanted the 2 or 4 cup french press. "CHIT!!"" (no bottomless cup here)

we opted for the 4 cup, and braced ourselves for the bill. she put down a press and instructs us to wait a minute before pressing..

it was like a caffeinated angels choir singing in our mouths. SOB!! i might just have to go and buy a new press. it's tuesday and i am still thinking about it. i made myself a respectable pour-over this morning as well.

i could give an eff about fancy machines..no thanks.

i do hate cleaning a french press. spinning apart the filter and rinsing and then rinsing the sink...(i know, 1st world problem)

what is it that makes a coffee (cheap) drip machines coffee so burnt tasting?

Been using a french press for a couple years now, bit of PITA cleaning it each time, but no worse than setting up a drip maker. I give it 5 stars even with cleaning.

Burnt tasting is because of the hot plate, when I used a drip I would shut it off right away and heat 2nd cups in the microwave. Since getting the FP I haven't used drip except for odd time company's over and needing 12 cups at once.

Drinking a nice cup of FP joe as I type. ;)

Pretty sure that's the same press that I have, or at least it's an earlier version of mine.

We've been using the same Bodum for over 10 years. We only rinse between uses except Sunday when it gets taken apart and washed by hand. The improved taste of FP over drip is worth the extra 3 minutes of cleaning once a week.

You might want to try an Aeropress

Buying shoes, and french presses ?

I swear I see these thread titles and look to the right to see if it's a Vash thread. They usually are! Not a bad thing, but your topics have a ring to them.

Trying to push all those fart threads down

Here is my daily system. Simple.

I got my wife the Aeropress for camping. But she has used it nearly everyday at home for several years now. She raves about it. Especially, when I make for her because she's running late for work.

I didn't realize you lived on the equator. I thought you were in northern CA somewhere.

I keep flip-flopping on what I use...

Broke my french press and decided to get an AeroPress instead - really like it except it only makes one cup which isn't good when it isn't just me

Lately, I've been using my Chemex as I can make a lot more at once

When I'm lazy I fall back to Nespresso or that BarStucks place ;) lol

I roast my own beans and am trying to figure out which beans with which roast is better in which coffee maker - too many choices!

Speaking of French Press, can someone give me details on how to use one? I just bought one, I beleive it's two cup. Got it at Home Goods so it was just the device and did not have any instructions.

My general question: How hot does the water need to be? I have hot water coming out of my bottled water machine but I'm not sure if I should be using boiling water from the stove.

How much coffee per cup shoud I be using?

I rarely grind anymore since I have started using the Kurig but I still keep some Pete's beans for when I have a large crowd - but how fine of a grind for the French Press.

I have a FP at home and a drip Mr. Coffee here at work.

However since we got the Nespresso machine I have not used the FP.

Wife says when the Nespresso dies (pretty tough little machine) she wants to replace it with a Keurig, at that point I am considering going to a full on espresso machine (but $$$)

You are NOT wrong...

I have found several pairs of shoes as well as the 4 cup Stainless version of the Bodum. The knock on the French Press is that it uses ALOT of coffee to make a cup. Whereas an Espresso machine is far more economical with the coffee and offers a more flavorful cup.

The drip or peculator coffee maker has been so outclassed that they are hardly even worth mentioning anymore...and you wonder why Starbucks is killing em dead out there?.
