1) A look under the hood sure is not inspiring to the DIYer.

It should be - there's much more room to work than any modern car. I much preferred working on the RR to my 911SC. And like most cars of that era, the owners manual is actually pretty detailed and useful, compared to newer cars.

2) In a rolls, you sit in the back - you are driven. If you can't afford a driver, don't bother.
That's only to people that don't know Rolls-Royces. All of the "Silver" models (Silver Dawn, Silver Cloud, Silver Shadow, Silver Spur, etc) and variants are what the company called "owner-drivers." You're only supposed to be driven in a Phantom - so it actually annoyed me a little when the new BMW-era Phantoms (seventh gen) first came out and almost everyone buying them was driving themselves.

In RR circles what was cheesy was buying a LWB version of a Silver car and being driven like you were in a proper limousine. Most unseemly, old chap. ;)

If you're Rolls-Royce shopping, $30-40k will buy you a nice driver made anytime from 50s onward. No one disparages the cheap Silver Clouds, Wraiths, and Dawns because they don't see them as much, but they're out there and just as pricey to bring up to snuff despite the lack of hydraulics. Thirty grand will get you a Silver Shadow or Spur you don't have to worry about, same as a Silver Dawn, Wraith, or Cloud (all RHD). Less will get you something with expensive needs, regardless of the braking system.

I actually have the same gripe about perception of the Porsche 928 - it doesn't cost more to keep on the road than a 911, but because the 911 is more popular (and expensive) owners are more willing to sink money into them without complaint. People see the trend and decide the 911 is "better" rather than just different.

Good slam. Undeserved, yet vicious.

Hmm I checked the Shakespeare concordance, couldn't find this.

Perhaps he's referring to Plato's cave?

That is the closest thing I can think of at this time.

Re-reading Republic (514a–520a) for the fun of it, the parallels between the allegorical cave and the Pelican OT board are obvious.

Carry on

As for me if I wanted high maintenance English car think I would skip the RR, an old Jag would be nice but I would have to be a checkbook mechanic and that is above my pay grade.

Camargues contempararily were considered to showy by most UK people

G60SuperCharger 04-30-2018 09:00 AM

^^^Cam argue with that! :D

That car is one of the few mistakes the styling house of Pininfarina ever made.

When the Camargues was built boxey was good.

And here it is... The Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV!

Rolls-Royce will sell a lot of these! Truly handsome IMO.

I can just see someone taking that off road...

RR is not supposed to be a truck...sic utility vehicle. The functionality of a SUV is diametrically opposed to the image of RR being the ultimate luxury car for the filthy rich.

Back in the 20's and 30's the top of the line Packards, Pierce Arrows, Dusenburgs and even Cadilliacs were all considered to be on par with the RR.RR even built cars in the USA for awhile.

When you are on the tall side, the larger cars have a certain attraction.

A lot of RR and Bently's market in the U.S. are sports figures from sports where size is generally on the large size.

The interior on these taller/large RR's and Bentley "SUV's" is very nice.

You mean darkly pigmented skinned people with names like Leshaun and Tanisha?

Does it come with a subwoofer or is that an extra?

Well it does have hydralics..

It is going to be a maintenance nightmare. Rich people won't bother and just get a new one. Resale value will be nil...

I think it is rather blingy...gaudy with all the chrome bezels and what not..rather shoddy actually.

sc_rufctr 05-12-2018 06:57 AM

"The Cullinan is customer driven" - The people that actually buy these new wanted a R-R SUV.

I guarantee you they'll sell a lot of these because 65% of luxury car sales are now SUVs.
With the Cullinan I see a very old fashioned design. It reminds me of the big saloons built just after WW2.

If I was in the market I'd certainly consider one.

Just think....Lucas electrics

pavulon 05-12-2018 07:55 AM

RR needs to fire whoever was responsible for designing that thing. It's horrible.

dafischer 05-12-2018 08:18 AM

It doesn't have a grill, rather a snout.
