What are the MUST DO's in New Orleans?
 

I'm going to be there FRI and SAT for a bachelor party and I've never been there. I need the scoop from experienced Pelicans! Food? Bars? Sights/Attractions? All suggestions welcome. Thanks

Obviously French Quarter and cemeteries. St. Roch (market) for awesome oysters and other food. Brennan's for dinner a NO tradition. I liked all the little voodoo shops too.

Find your way to a balcony in the quarter and spend a night throwing beads.

Eat a dinner at Emeril's.

Eat a lunch at an oyster bar.

Ride a trolley through the Garden District.

thanks keep the ideas coming. I'm staying at the St. James in the Central Business District. I'm 50 and the bachelor party is for my BIL who is 28 so I'll be trying to hang with his young buddies. Should be fun!

+1 Café du Monde for breakfast, Pat O'Briens for a hurricane (ONLY 1), if it's still open Dick's Cabaret for over priced drinks and women you can't touch, Mothers kitchen for Jambalaya, and a muffaletta from somewhere that makes them fresh. Oh yeah, mudbugs and voodoo beer in a jazz club.

Muffaletta is a must. It's different. Not a Philly cheese steak from one of those two places in Philly but a required experience.

Cafe Du Mode also. For the experience.

Eat Muffaletta and/or Cafe Du Monde early in day then walk it off. Bignets are sugar bombs.

Dinner. I defer to others. I liked Patout's but believe they are closed.

I never got the attraction of Café Du Monde. All they have is coffee and beignets...

We weren't all that impressed either. Just, meh.

I would scratch Cafe Du Monde in favor of a large Hurricane at Pat O'Brien's.

However, not a crime to see what everybody talks about. Interesting venue.

It will not be the highlight of your trip.

Killer crab cakes at one of the mentioned dinner places stand a much better chance of this.

I've eaten at all the big-name New Orleans restaurants and the one that impressed me the most was Emeril's.

With your short time, and the list of things to do. Don't try doing anything specific. If you have never been just take in the atmosphere and enjoy what you are exposed to. The VERY last thing I would want to do to go to coffee call. The weather this weekend down here is going to be hot. Hot coffee, on hot day surrounded by scores of hot humans, no thanks! The wife and I were in the quarters last week for the day, a day is enough, and had a great time. Picked up some art around the square saw a number of street performers. Central Groceries is almost direct across from Cafe Du Monde, worth going in, if you have time. There are much better restaurants out away from the quarters but you'll need a car for that. Mothers on Poydras is great but always has a line and only takes cash. Just enjoy the people and scenery. Again, its gonna be hot and humid this weekend. One other thing is to go out to NOLA Motorsport track thats west of the city. Worth going out there to see the sights.

Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar: This just may be the most historic bar in the country. On the outskirts of the French Quarter lies Lafitte’s, the oldest bar in America, dating all the way back to 1722. The blacksmith business was a front for owners Jean and Pierre Lafitte’s smuggling operation. Not only was this place a haunt for spies and pirates, it’s rumored to actually be haunted.


Don't look up photos, just go there and have a beer.

Terrific jazz bunch get there early.

The WWII museum is a must.. And you cannot go to NOLA and not go to Cafe Du Monde. I wouldnt waste my time going to the hob nob restaurants like Brennans or Antoines or Arnauds, etc... Those are great, but just fancy places.. Youll have a more NOLA experience if you go to Olde Nola Cookery or is sister store - Oceana Grill.. or Masperos and Central grocery.. Acme Oyster house.. etc.. There will be a line... The Famous Door on Bourbon is one of the best hangout bars with live music but there are others, Cats.. etc.. As others have mentioned, youre just a few blocks from St. Charles Street, so definitely hop on a street car and ride a loop around through the garden District.

Note that the Riverwalk Outlet Mall has a Cafe du Monde branch inside. Same coffee and beignets without the crazy wait and nasty conditions. It is cool to walk past the original location, but good lord, I would not wait an hour plus and hustle for it.
