oatmeal.

my wife and i were discussing my daily oatmeal. i have been doing the same breakfast pretty much EVERY workday.

5-min Bob's RedMill steel cut oats. with raisins. i add boiling water and let it soak during my commute. then eat it scanning emails. i think that Costco bag is 10lbs.

i think that Stanley food cup is 10 years old. man, i bet i have eaten 100bls of the stuff.

i look at the gruel and curse myself. haha..but once i start eating it, i get by. vary palatable. it is very plain but gets the job done and holds back the starvation until 11:30..then lunch.

for the record, eating oatmeal does ZERO to cholesterol. mine is good, but not great. it should be great. "acts like little sponges for cholesterol....." total BS.

I like to use the crunchy peanut butter ground up fresh at my local store or at Lucky's.

I do not mix it in, I take small bits of the glob out with my spoon along with a few blueberries at the bottom and maybe some coconut floating on top.

What does not work for me is mixing Hemp Fiber Protein powder into it, the texture is similar to a dirty kitchen sink sponge dropped on the floor. :D

I can't do oatmeal. I've tried every way to Sunday to like oatmeal and I just can't. Now cream-o-wheat on the other hand I could eat every fricken day for life. Love the stuff!

Put your biscuits and gravy on TOP of your hashbrowns and then top with scrambled eggs. What we call haystacks around here and they are the bomb! Not easy on the waistline though.

wildthing 05-30-2018 02:23 PM

I add raisins, agave syrup, and some nuts like walnuts or pecans or almonds. I also use milk, instead of water. Increases calories and protein...

flatbutt 05-30-2018 02:31 PM

I stop cooking my oatmeal a minute or so in then I stir an egg into it and finish cooking. I eat it with fresh berries on top.

LWJ 05-30-2018 03:37 PM

Funny. I had Bob's Steel Cut and raisins this am. Milled just down the road. I have met Bob. Nice guy.

gtc 05-30-2018 04:22 PM

Pro tip:
If you mix kale and coconut oil in to your oatmeal, the coconut oil will make it easier to scrape the other two in to the trash.

msk1986911 05-30-2018 04:30 PM

On Sunday nights I usually make a batch for the week: 4 cups of water, 1 cup of steel cut oats and a handful of raisins. Bring the water and raisins to a boil, add the oats and let simmer for 1 minute. Put the lid on it and let it sit overnight and microwave one serving each day.

Try milk instead of water.....that’s called porridge. It’s the only way to eat it! The other way is called gruel. That’s what Scrooge ate!

pete3799 05-30-2018 04:49 PM

What..........no maple syrup?

I like oat meal. I prefer rolled to the steel cut variety. I also like Oat Bran which is harder to find (Bob's Red Mill has it). drkshdw, you may like oat bran, it's kind of in between oat meal and cream of ____ (wheat, rice, malt, whatever). I also love cream of wheat, malt-o-meal and cream of rice which are all about the same.

I grew up with regular quaker oat meal with butter, milk and sugar.

I've since used brown sugar, maple syrup (real) and honey for more flavor.

I've stopped adding sugar 99% of the time. I also stopped cooking it. I add water and yogurt (real stuff with live cultures and no added sugar) to the raw oatmeal and let it sit over night. It's yummy that way. I'll usually add fruit and possibly a spice. I mostly do berries, straw, black, blue, rasp... Sometimes I'll include cardamom with the berries or cinnamon. I've also done banana and some nuts which is tasty.

For something savory (oat bran, never tried it with oat meal) I'll add a little butter, some soy sauce and some cheese.

I've also tried adding egg, bacon (cooked and chopped) and sauteed onion and that's also tasty.

My g/f eats Oatmeal plain...no cooking, no water, no milk, no honey. Plain and dry.
Ugh!!!

sammyg2 05-30-2018 05:05 PM

Every morning except Saturdays when I cook up a mess of bacon, hash browns, snausages, and eggs:

She doesn't like to cook and prepare meals for herself - or me either - and eats poorly. She gets veggies and fruit only when I feed her.
Other than that, energy bars, scrambled eggs, and lots of water is her main diet.
Oh, and Oatmeal now/then.

A930Rocket 05-30-2018 07:52 PM

I can only eat oatmeal with brown sugar.

Yum!

This sounds interesting. Can you share the ratio of water and yoghurt to oats? I'd like to try doing this, cuz right now I'm eating a bagel and an egg every morning and I want to get off that schneid...SmileWavy

We get steel cut oats from Costco and bags of almonds. I toast the almonds in the micro for a minute (put a layer in a paper plate). They add great flavor along with the milk, butter, & honey.

aigel 05-30-2018 09:09 PM

I put milk on mine. I use the trader joe's stuff. Roasted almond slices, flax seed make it more nutty. I also add cinnamon and rasins. Always cut some fruit in it - banana is go-to. Mango is awesome but not available year round.

I have branched out to cottage cheese with friut but until then it has been 15 years on daily oatmeal. Served me well, I think, especially in terms of digestion.

Took oatmeal to work everyday (Quaker Oats (not that instant crap) almonds, craisens) for breakfast. Tasted great and was filling, but was very hungry a few hours later and had very low energy when I went running at lunch. Ate after.

Just read two days ago in the book FOOD by Mark Hyman, M.D. that oatmeal places havoc on blood sugar by causing a massive insulin reaction followed by a crash in blood sugar level. That explains why most runs sucked. When you are massively hungry, then you tend to over eat at your next meal.

GWN7 05-31-2018 12:44 AM

Ate it every day after my MI. Add my own cinnamon and Splenda. Then one day my body and brain said "No more" and I had to cook bacon and eggs. Now I have fruit and toast (whole wheat) and various toppings.

livi 05-31-2018 12:49 AM

Oatmeal microwaved in water and a bit salt. First thing in the morning and last thing before bed.

jcommin 05-31-2018 04:41 AM

Ate it all of the time when I was younger all the way thru college. I then discovered eggs over easy with corn beef hash. On the weekends, its eggs: omelets or over easy.

Here's the recipe that the missus uses.
Quote:

Overnight Oatmeal Recipe

Mix:
1/2 cup of oatmeal
1/2 cup of water
1/2 cup yogurt (Fage - or any other live culture yogurt, preferably whole fat)
1/2 cup milk
1 T chia seeds (optional, adds more fiber)

I let this mix sit out several hours for yogurt culture to act on oatmeal. This makes the oatmeal easier to digest, and results in a creamier texture. You can just put mix straight into refrigerator.

Add fruit to taste before refrigerating.

Will last 4 days unless it’s a highly perishable fruit like banana.

KevinTodd 05-31-2018 05:44 AM

I like it, especially during the winter months, and it is part of my routine training regimen prior to long-distance races. I like the steel-cut type, and typically only put a handful of blueberries on top.

wswartzwel 05-31-2018 06:36 AM

I may have to try the steel cut oats... Been eating the Quaker instant stuff every morning at work while doing the morning email thing for years.

crb07 05-31-2018 06:43 AM

Whole Foods instant Apple Cinnamon oatmeal with Grape Nuts on top for pre-ride breakfast.
On other days I add vanilla yogurt and a banana.

Quaker makes Steel Cut also--and it takes a few minutes to cook, but it's well worth the effort!

WPOZZZ 05-31-2018 09:08 AM

I was never an oatmeal eater. Then I came across the instant flavored stuff from Quaker. Now I eat it all the time.

mikehinton 05-31-2018 11:08 AM

Dried cranberries are also a great topping, along with walnuts.

Always. Put it all in the insta-pot with a little vanilla and it is perfect. One of the things an insta-pot is great for.

Oh, it is always the real maple not that pancake syrup stuff.

Dude, that is BS. Oatmeal is not a refined carb. It takes a long time to digest and there are no spikes as a result. Your issue most likely were the CRASINS. That's loaded with added sugars. 1/4 cup CRASINS have 29g of sugar (!). There is your issue ... that will make things spike at breakfast!
