That's because you're not buying yours from Dollar General.

But but but... our phony-baloney friends won't be impressed when we tell them we shopped at dollar general. Can't have that.
I've never been in a dollar general store, we don't have them around here that I know of. About a year ago my wife did some shopping at a dollar general while visiting her sister out of state. She liked the store and low prices. Last edited by sammyg2; 06-11-2018 at 08:59 AM.. |

The thing with the $$$ stores is that you have to compare contents (weight) with what you are getting at Wally World etc. Sometimes the $$$ stores are no bargain. Mostly from what I see is that the clientele of the $$ stores are people living on the edge who can not afford Wally world.
That said I go in once in awhile for certain items. Another avenue for the grocery budget minded are the Mexican Super markets. Their produce prices can not be beat. Brown Onions 7 lbs for a $. Iceberg lettuce 3 for a $. Pineapples 99 cents. Roma Tomatoes 3 lbs for a $. Tell me you like paying 89 cents lb for Brown Onions. I am seeing lots of older white folks frequenting those markets...It is called stretching you $$$$. Then yeah I know, I know we come to the Thrift Stores...Let us try Oral B tooth brushes which are about $3 ea at Wally world...I buy unopened packages of 6 of them for 2$.. Or a set of new washing machine hoses for $6. 7lbs of home made bar laundry soap for $4. then there is cookware of every description...from German Chefs knives, to solid copper pans, Vita Mix blenders China you name it, you can find it. It is absolutely unreal what people are giving away. If you really want to see how prodigal Americans are all you have to do is check out the mens shirt sections... every store has 1000's of practically new men's shirts on the racks...remember an item only stays in a store for 4 weeks before it is moved out...and replaced with new inventory. Shoes pants jackets...and women's cloths has an even larger section...the waste is staggering..both environmentally and as a dissipation of wealth. The other day I over heard a couple of elderly black women talking about the increasing prices in the Thrifts and how much the cost of living in LV has gone up. They had come to LV decades ago for a lower cost of living but now they were saying prices were becoming more like LA. THEIR REFRAIN WAS THAT THE COST OF LIVING WAS GOING UP BUT THE WAGES WERE NOT GOING UP. I was really tempted to to put my two cents in, but didn't feel good enough to do it. So there it is...Americans are under the gun financially as their standard of living is going down and as their financial where with all declines so goes demand which is needed to propel the global economy of scale. So you have a slowing growth momentum as debt increases which needs that global economic growth to keep up with debt service. It is as simple as all that. This economic dynamic then puts increasing stresses on society and politics as situation becomes more dire. Simple equations really. Now the powers that be keep putting lipstick on the pig and telling you how purty and fkable she is cause they don't want you to panic and go to the mattresses with your declining $$$ where with all. They must think that magic is gona happen to save them.

As a landlord, almost half my gross income goes straight into the city coffers. (gross. The house is a hundred years old and needs tons of work. I do my best.) I don't have kids in school. I don't drive much, and roads here are straight out of a war zone despite being paved a year ago. I don't use much infrastructure at all. The city finally mowed the flea infested dog park a few days ago for the first time this year but I still have to pay extra dog and park registration. This is happening even while city planning allows high rises and everything else to destroy my small family rental business. Then they won't give me a certificate of occupancy for half a year because the wood porch banisters (which are not even required per exact city code spec mind you I did homework) has shrunk and now spec at a 4 AND 2/16 inch illegal gap. Gasp. Inspectors don't return calls and don't have notes. Infinite loop. Even the head of the department cant fix it after so many emails and letters. My city is actively trying to destroy affordable housing such as my place. Last edited by john70t; 06-11-2018 at 12:11 PM.. |

Now I do not know where you stand on Trump, but millions voted for him just because of this and a few just go snap and go out in a blaze of glory... It might not be so bad if the powers that be leveled with people and told them the truth...but you have that swivel head thingy dichotomy of them tellin you how swell your life will be if only you bought a brand new XXXX or used this brand of tires and drank that brand of beer. While the news at 11 says the economy is doin fine....all the while you are tryin to make those ends meet. The sad truth is that you can not put Humpty Dumpty back together again and make it like it once was...

The truth is that to keep makin things look peachy keen swell they have been digging a 6 foot hole for you and everybody else out back...So when that rubber band of a illusion of how swell it all is goes snap one day....you will fit right in.
You have over 100% debt to GDP...back a few years they was sayin you needed 3% or better growth to keep up...well since 08 we ain't never got that 3% nor better. The hole has just grew bigger and deeper, so the question now becomes what percentage of growth do you need now to catch up? What woulda worked 7 or 8 years ago aint got done...the hole has gotten deeper so what would it take now to make things right? AND would doing those right things make everybody worse off or the same as if they just done nothin? Those are questions you should ask yo selves.

Sometimes ‘affordable housing’ is a euphemism for section 8 crack houses.
It takes a strong council/mayor to actively pursue ridding an area of those. In our little town a white knight of sorts has come on the scene and is buying the old slum houses and renovating them one by one thus raising rents to the point we don’t have run down once grand homes with multiple tenants, pit bulls chained in the front yard and cars parked all over the untended lawn. Not saying this is you but perhaps neighbors are putting pressure on the council? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ours has some good deals in the produce section usually. I always get my Atomic Fireballs there, too. The ones around here don't carry any produce. I wish they did, because of the quick/easy access.

A new D G just open here in my small town, and I do mean small, less than 400 people. It's near the main intersection and just a short distance from the gas station and small convenience store that has been the only store for 15 miles. And really gouged on prices as a result.
Well I popped into the D G after it opened and was blown away at the huge inventory they have. Very well layed out and of course clean and fresh at this point. Totally turned me around. Don't think I'd ever been in one before, but was holding a negative oppinion anyway. Quite a pleasent surprise. I think I'll enjoy having such a nice option so close. I suspect the gas station convenience store will be taking big losses now, karmic balance at play. Cheers Richard Last edited by tevake; 08-04-2020 at 12:12 PM.. |
