Re-Painting "Nice" Phone Dial Rims
I just received a nice set of 15X7 phone dials as a second set for my ‘87NA, and after a quick bit of cleaning its pretty obvious that they’re in great shape - with what appears to be the “factory finish” nice and bright, and for the most part not dented, gouged, or scratched.
I want to repaint these rims a different color - and am wondering how to proceed with wheels that really don’t need any additional cleaning - and the factory finish has just a bit of “tooth” so my sense is that no sanding will be needed prior to repainting. Given the above, my sense is that I should just go ahead with a final de-grease, clean, rinse, and dry - then proceed with a non-filling primer, paint, and clear coat. Does this sound about right? |

Not to me. At the minimum use a scotch pad on the rims before trying to paint. Then degrease them several times to make sure they are clean.
Now, to go the next level, have them powder coated for a durable, excellent finish.

What color of Scotch-brite pad should I use to scuff up the rims prior to priming?
