Painting undercoating
I am restoring a 1970 911T. The undercarriage and wheel arches have their original undercoating on them, with dirt, grime, and overspray. I want to clean up everything then paint the cleaned-up original undercoating (in black). What paint or product should I use on the undercoat?

Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

I am getting ready to this, but haven’t yet, so I can’t say if this will work for sure, but the paint supply place recommended using a sealer and then single stage urethane paint.

Not sure if you have started the cleaning yet, but if you are NOT planning on re-applying the factory-like undercoating, I've had good luck with spray on (foaming) citrus based cleaners. Spray a section at a time, let it soak a few minutes, agitate with a bristle brush and then wipe with a damp towel. Be prepared to do each section several times until the rinsing cloths come out clean. Once clean to where you want it, the sealer and single stage urethane paint recommendation is spot on.

painting the chip guard / stone guard in most all cases is a bad idea! it will chip the paint off .
cleaning the ZEP industrial purple clean I found works the best for cleaning chassis. I spray it on using a power washer then let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes then with a few different scrub brushes and red scuff pads I will scrub the undercarriage doing one section at a time . after I will again soak the area with more purple cleaner with the power washer and then blast it using the power washer under high pressure. if you looking to make it black then use black chip guard. personally I like the U-pol. the u-pol will be a flat gloss after it's dried. if you want a mat gloss then you can add in some gloss black paint when you spray it. |
Paint
I heard you say black…….not sure what the body color is but if you want original I believe they should be body color. Your car so your choice but just bringing that up as a consideration.

All my research (including on this forum) has said that it would have come out of the factory with black undercoating. Do you disagree? |
Paint question
I defer to your research ….lts been a long while since I have had early 911. Last one was a 73 so May not apply……all 914s are body color unless they have been oversprayed.
I was going by distant memory so you probably have better information. |
Just did a search
You are correct……see 2 photos from early S registry
73 ( my reference was body color) earlier painted over black http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1738986842.png http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1738986888.png |
