I need a paint system for my car. Suggestions?
Hi all,
As a few of you have been following, I am working on a restoration of my 69 T, and making it an RSR look retro-racer. I am almost to the point where I have to choose a paint system for it. I need a primer, hardener, reducer, base coat, clear coat. It doesn't have to be pebble beach, but I would like it to look nice. I'm going to be painting it one of the German RAL colors. I have a deep discount at the local Sherwin Williams automotive paint store, but I'm open to suggestions. I have heard that every brand has a great premium paint, and bargain paints as well. I would also consider using a Sikkens clear, as I've heard it's the best...but I don't know if I have the budget for all Sikkens product. Thanks! Thanks!

I may be out of line, but for most quality shops I know, nobody uses SW, I don't like it either, but since we are a shop, we are require to use the same line from beginning to end (undercoat to topcoat) in order to be guaranteed by the paint manufactures. Are you gonna spray it yourself?

Your right, just about every paint manufacturer has a good premium line. I would guess that you are not working in a downdraft booth. You will want a high solids clearcoat so you can wetsand and buff with plenty of material on the car. You also need to conisder the temperature of your workspace. You may opt for a system with a quicker flash time. PPG, Dupont, Sikkens, Standox, Spies Hecker, Sherwin Williams, ect. all produce great products with different advantages. My favorites are PPG and Glasurit but because of my environment I find myself using more Dupont than anything. Axiom is right, I don't know of many shops that use Sherwin Williams. I did however, paint a 1970 Impala with customer supplied Sherwin Williams. I was really surprised with how the clear layed out and the gloss retention. That being said, I can't say SW is bad paint when I actually had good luck with it.

I've done some research on SW paints now, and apparently they didn't have a very good reputation in the 90's, but in the last few years, they've really improved the product. I'll pay a visit to the local paint store today (I have to go there anyway to get my POR 15) and talk about it.
