So apparently $1000 get you

A fender with lots of filler and rust as well as a bad repair/fitment

Fender in question:
When installed on the car the bottom would not wrap under like the original and stuck out past the door about a quarter inch

Turns out some one had tried to repair the inner brace by welding in a new section.

Unfortunately, the also loaded the outer surface of the fender with filler and didn't check fit prior to shipping it to me

I dug a little more and found some rust holes that were just plastered over with filler

Now I'm thinking I'll have to butcher my SC fender and make a patch section from it

is that the fender you got from d/c auto?
the quality of their stuff can be so-so.
however, rob has been fair to me when i complained about quality
and has provided replacments. (but i'm talking about small $ things.)
if nothing else try for a partial refund or credit.
i'm sure the shipping was a killer.

Nearly 30 year old fenders are gonna be in need of cosmetic surgery, I've seen it many times even with newer parts.

Good luck and post some pictures of your welding skills.

bob, yes that's the one from DC. I'll give them a call and roll the dice. Who knows.....

Axiom, I wouldn't have been so bummed if I only paid $350 or so for the fender like the other one, but I was charged $700+ another $350 to ship it.

As for welding skills, let's just say it's a good thing I have a lot of scrap to practice on.... I'm trying to teach myself those skills and have access to Mig/Tig and recently purchased a Dillon torch set, though I'm still not too comfortable with it.

I'll post more pics soon.

Well Tom, don't feel so bad, we are talking about the passenger side fender, around here those are like gold, I know of somebody asking $1400.00 for it.

We can never have enough practice, and there are a lot of tools and gadgets to help you weld across that fender with very little worpage, but if you don't have them and want to get them, you may have to pay for shipment.

Keep us posted.

Thanks Jae(is it?) I did manage to get in touch with Rob today and he said he would try to do whats right by me as far as partial reimbursement. So I will email him the pics here and ask for credit. That's a step.
Here's what I'm contemplating, I'll cut the marked area show and take a matching part of my SC fender and butt weld them. Does this seem like a good course of action? I welcome suggestions.
Thanks

NO, no no You want to weld at the narrowest point, the two folds at each of the fender is whar makes it strong, so the smallest the travel, the less worpage.

Rudy, should I just spot patch the rust holes and replace the section I removed with a section from my SC fender?

Tom: before you cut the other fender, try patching those rust holes, thin and rusted metal takes a little more patience to weld, if all fails, cut as low as you can.

tom,
one other observation:
that line of corrosion is a classic.
make sure you thoroughly clean and expose the INSIDE fender mount flange.
and rust proof/treat the heck out of it, to prevent future heartbreak!
good luck

Bob, I did that on the other fender already and plan to do it on this one as well. DC shot primer over the factory undercoating so all that will have to come off then I'll seal it with por15 and a new coat of undercoating.
Man, I hate rust

Just got off the phone with Rob @ DC and they issued me a credit for $300, which I think is pretty fair.

What about a MA Shaw fender? Never fitted one but they look great up close, or am I out of line?

I'd rather use steel. If it was a dedicated track car, then for sure I would go 'glass

Got some work done today and I'm very pleased with the results.

Started with the ill fated fender and made a cut another 2.5" higher than previously to get above the rust

Cut a corresponding piece from my SC fender and trimmed to fit

Put in a few tacks with most of the fender bolts tightened to maintain alignment

Removed the fender and started stitching it together(pic is from the inside of fender).

Ground down the welds, and much to my surprise not much warp at all

Remounted to the car

Needless to say, I'm a happy monkey

Still have to strip and re-do the undercoating on this fender before I move on to the rust issues in the door sill areas.
